I thought I might report this for Geri --

Sad news here. Jane and Thorny (of Casa Colonial) were
driving back to Oaxaca from the States and had an auto
accident, somewhere near Toluca. I don't have any
details! Anyway, Thorny was killed. She is okay . . .
He was such a fine person, always happy and helpful . . . . .
Needless to say just about the entire expat community
here is in mourning¨-- as reported
by Geri Anderson.

The good news is that Luis is attempting another Nine Bay
Swim for the children of San Felipe which you can read
about at --

I am very sad to hear this news about the couple who ran Casa Colonial. We stayed with them back in 2001 or 2002, over the Christmas holidays and the Raddish Festival. Great hosts and the "inn" is just so perfect for a base of travel in and around Oaxaca.

The cast of characters who frequent Casa Colonial: guests who stay there, locals who work there and "los artisanos" who just hang out there........ This would be the perfect setting for a John Irving story of twisted humorous fiction gone Latin. My wife described it as "quirky fun in the sun". I always enjoy those trips where NOTHING is "normal".......... it makes for great times and memories.

The guide, who seemed to work with Casa Colonial, was a fellow named David Sanchez and he was without a doubt the MOST captivating guide I have been with. (I recall he was a former Political Science professor in DF) Even my 10 year old daughter was totally mesmerized with his view of early life on top of Monte Alban.

Excellent trip and a fine place to stay. I hope the colorful stories and history at Casa Colonial continue on in spite of this very sad news.
