FM3 renewal in Cozumel

Can't Post | Private Reply
I used a Cozumel lawyer to renew for the first time in Cozumel. I am back in the states and heading down early Dec. to renew for the second time and want to do it by myself. Can't seem to find anything online that might be helpful to what is needed. I do not have a Mexican Bank account. Would appreciate a walk thru if possible.

that is where I started but I have heard that there are new requirments in place to renew in cozumel....was hoping that someone who has done it in the last month or so might post. I heard income requirements went up and that other papers are required. I made a mistake by not getting a copy of the papers my attny. filled so I feel like I am starting from scratch since I have nothing to refer to.

I'm not sure we have any Cozumelites hanging out on the forums, so you may not get anything new straight from the horses mouth. I suppose you could try posting on the Yucatan Peninsula area forum, or PM'ing Jim the forum moderator.

For what it's worth, I just renewed last week (obviously not in Cozumel). If anything it was easier than the first renewal. This is not the kind of thing that really needs a lawyer. Just go visit your Migracion office and ask about the requirements. What Rolly lists is basically the kit, so you might bring those things with you when you go. Migracion likes it when expats act like they at least have a clue about what's happening.

While Migracion is a federal agency, and you'd think the requirements would be the same everywhere, you'd be wrong. There seems to be a lot of local interpretation. I'll just relate what I needed here. Your mileage may vary. For my first renewal I needed photos, not needed this time. I didn't need a copy of the FM3, but it only costs pennies to have copies made. Needed only the original of the request for extension.

The fee was the same as last year, $ 1,038 pesos. They said it's going up next year. Doesn't everything.

This probably hasn't helped much, but I would encourage you to try the renewal yourself.

I am going to give it a try.....I have decided to donate the money it would cost to pay the atty to a few families I know that were hit hard by the hurricane. So say a prayer for me....I am going to give it a go.....

As Ed and Fran said, it is not rocket science and does not require an attorney and with Rolly's info it can be a piece of cake. There are also people in Cancun who will work with you and the local Immigration office for a couple of beers or a small donation. Paying a real lawyer is not necessary. That being said:
1.- I am not familiar with Cozumel and as most of us know, the law and procedures are not the same everywhere and depend on local attitudes, enforcement and judgement.
2.- I am not that up on current procedures since I have also not had the need to deal with Immigration for many years--one of the things that makes life good!!
3.- The biggest hurdle that I did find when I did have to process the FM-3 and then FM-2 was my own personality. Spanish or the lack thereof can be a contributing facotr to the level of difficulty in the process but since I spoke Spanish, that was not it. I have not been overly blessed with patience, tolerance and acceptance of burocracy in any situation--something that I am getting better at but it was never something I wanted to test against the well-practiced members of Mexican Immigration. Sooooooooooooo I hired someone to do it for me, I avoided all the hassle, frustration and anger and just went when required to sign the final documents.

So goes my own painful confession. Do it yourself if it is worth it to you--it can be done.

Which brings up another difference between offices of Migración. Each local rep will have his own personality and his own manner of being either helpful or a pita. I'm fortunate in that my local rep is of the helpful/organized variety. So for me, renewing hasn't required much in the way of patience.

I think that is what makes Mexico so interesting....it's never the same twice.....
I have a friend who is heading back to Coz tomorrow who is going to go by and check the latest Regs...she said she would help me if I need it so I am getting my paperwork ready from here...off to the Secty of State and then hopefully back to me before I leave the end of the month....I have heard that the head of IMSS goes between Cozumel and Playa and you need to hit it just right...
