FM2 needed for vehicle license in Quintana Roo

Can't Post | Private Reply
We recently (in Nov 2009) tried to license a new utility trailer in Chetumal and were told that we must now have an FM2 instead of a FM3 in order to obtain a Mexican license plate. This new rule applies to cars, motorcycles, trucks, and trailers. Residents of Quintana Roo need to be made aware of this new change and the effect that it may have on those of us who currently hold FM3s.

I am going to assume that you mean 2008. Interesting--let me check and see if others have the same experience. We all know that the law is interpreted differently by different people sometimes. Thanks for posting.

Yes--I did mean November 2008; not 2009. We also did send a message to the consulate in Merida to see if anyone else had also reported problems with this issue.

It is either new or someone is trying something new to see if they can make a few extra pesitos.

I do believe it is a new requirement only in Quintana Roo. We went to the licensing office in Chetumal with a good friend who is a Mexican national and are fairly certain we did not misunderstand as we asked two different officials in the office.

I am personally amazed that a US citizen could actually get in touch with our consulate in Merida! Have they responded or are you still waiting?? Did anyone there speak English?

As you can tell, I have had some demoralizing experiences with them. Hope things have gotten better in the past ten years.

It's not that I wouldn't trust just going directly to someone in the appropriate department in the State government and listening to what they would say BUT we all know how you can get different answers to the same question from different people.

I had thought that the ones who might REALLY know might be car dealers since they would be affected directly. Luckily someone I know just bought a car and here is what she says:

"We bought a vehicle this past November and when my husband went to get the plates, he was told that he couldn't with the FM3 and that that had just changed... Luckily a very good Mexican friend had gone with him to help with translations and we ended up having to have the plates in our friends name. Then when my husband went to get Insurance....... he said that he thought that was incorrrect info and that he would check... and all we'd have too do was transfer the plates. Will let you know what we find out when we return to Cancun at the end of the month."

Will post more if I find out anything else.
