Exploring Chiapas

I'm planning an extended trip within Chiapas State. Would some of you veterans point me in the right direction regarding a reasonable location to use as a home base (Tuxtla, San Cristobal or somewhere on the coast?), places to see (the Mayan ruins at Palenque?), areas to avoid, best means of transportation, etc.? I've read Carron Harlan excellent article.

Most likely I'd travel by bus from Mexico City. Which terminal services Chiapas?

I'd say don't use Tuxla as a base, it is not central to many places other than the Sumidero Canyon and it is a long steep drive of many hours and many hairpin turns up to San Cris. Stay in San Cristóbal definitely and use it as a base to explore the highlands around it. I recommend staying in Palenque as well, it is down in the lowlands, central to a lot of interesting areas and there are many places to stay in all price ranges there. From Palenque you can get a collectivo to Frontera Corazol and take a boat up the Usamacinta river to the ruins of Yaxchilan, spend a night in Frontera or go on to Bonampak and stay there and visit the ruins. If you are adventurous, continue on from Bonampak along the the Guatemala border to Comitan. Spend the night and consider taking a bus down to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, it is a days trip down, an easy border to cross and well worth it.

Chiapas is a fascinating state, it would be easy to spend months just exploring and that's what we've done but spread over many trips. We have been over there twice in just the last few months, once to take the river trip to Yaxchilan and spend NYE in San Cristóbal and recently on our way back from Guatemala. I never tire of the views and the beauty of the countryside and there is always something new to discover there.

If you aren't familiar with the area, use Google Earth or a good topo map to get an idea of the extreme elevation changes within the state. Keep those in mind when planning trips or considering where to use as a base, it can take a lot longer than you would think to travel some of these roads. It's best to explore the highlands separately from the lowlands as going up and down takes awhile.

Richard:

Two things.

Mike´s post is almost a year old. I´m not sure he even posts here anymore.
Your question is too vague.

Why Chiapas? What is your goal? Be a little more specific and maybe someone can help you.
