Emily in Celestún

Want to check in and say we sure were lucky. Today all is well. Around 7:30 this morning sky got cloudy, wind came up strong and it started to rain. Must have been Emily exiting Yuc penninsula around Santa Clara/Dzlim de Bravo. Read that they experienced storm surge in those small fishing villages. Right now we have the cola of Em and it is blustery. Very little rain fell here. No surge. No damage. AND our electricity is back on. Have not read anything re Akumal.

Thanks for that Sherril, I'm really glad it missed you. I'm really glad she didn't stall inland and cause more flooding too.

We've heard nothing yet on Akumal either. Looks like it was a direct hit. I'm anxiously waiting to hear from my friends. I may call a relative later in case they got through to them.

We avoided a direct hit here in Cancun too. Just got power back at 8 p.m. here in downtown. I did hear thaat Akumal was almost a direct hit. Hope all is well there. Fox is here in Cancun now and will be touring the devastated areas.

Hi Jonna, Here is a website for the newspaper out of Mérida "El Diario de Yucatan"- http://www.yucatan.com.mx/ They have a lot of info re Emily. Am sure Jim knows a Cancun paper that might cover Akumal. You have to keep in mind that they are only showing pics of the worst things. Good news rarely makes the news. think that you have done all the right things with your condo and most likely are looking at a clean up. Saw some footage on Mex tv this morning of Playa del Carment. roof off a Pemex station, downed trees but certainly not all of them, people walking down flooded streets, a small plane jammed into a tar paper shack. Did not see any destruction of any big buildings probably because there was none. I am hoping you will have good news soon.

Some of the things I'm hearing are better than I at first thought. Some places in Tankah and Soliman Bay were hit hard, others not so hard. My place, Casa Tropical, in Tankah had some damage but it doesn't appear to be too bad. (my plywood held up). Some neighbors though weren't as fortunate. The whole area is void of vegetation and debris is all over the place in Akumal. From other B Boards I hear many palapa structures were damaged and lots of windows were broken but now too much major damage in Akumal.
I'll probably have to redo my photo becasue the beach won't be looking like that for awhile

I've been following the papers and forums but didn't feel better until I heard this morning from the property manager. They all came through fine although I'm betting there are some good stories in it.

The damage to our condo was minimal, we lost one of the sliding glass doors facing the water. I assume we also have some water damage but clean up is underway and there have already been visits by the insurance adjustors. No electricity and no idea when that will be back. All the power poles along the highway between Playa and Akumal are down.

There is a detail picture of where the eye wall struck land http://www.cozumeldivemap.com/emily.html that helps visualize this if you are familiar with the area.

What Roberto said is that because we were inside and to the north of the eye wall, we had less damage. Puerto Aventuras which was closer to the eye wall had a lot of damage, he gave no details but said it was extensive. There is a little part of me that hopes that during the tidal surge the dolphin were able to escape. I hate that they keep them penned up there. We have friends who own a condo there and I am going to call them later and see if they have heard anything. They are Red Cross volunteers and currently they are deployed in South Texas for Emily's next performance.

I'm relieved that Emily was in a hurry and moved through quickly. I just hope that there won't be a repeat this year. It is very, very early in the year for us to have been in the storm path, usually they come our way from late Sept to early Nov.
