Dangers in Puerto Escondido

I don't know where I read about this but if someone can confirm I would appreciate it. My friend leaves Jan. 3, 2008 for Puerto Escondido and I had read that you should not walk on the beach at night. Of course, people really enjoy telling you the worst. Thanks for any input. Norma

I stayed at the surfers' beach (Playa Zipolite?), not in Puerto Escondido proper, for a week, twice in 2000 and 2001. It wasn't dangerous there to be on the beach before midnight, but things may have changed. Normal precautions always apply: don't wander around drunk or stoned, don't carry large sums of cash or jewelry, don't run with the lowlife.

I recall that the US state department in the past has recommended not walking on beaches at night in Mexico. The current posting says to avoid beaches with few people on them, but does not distinguish between day and night on the beaches. It does say "Women traveling alone are especially vulnerable and should exercise caution, particularly at night." The current posting does not mention Puerto Escondido by name, but past postings mentioned it as a higher crime area.

I have an old UK government posting mentioning Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Campeche as having a higher risk of robberies, "Avoid travel after dark and isolated beaches at all times." Puerto Escondido is in Oaxaca state.

I recall reading about some nasty crimes in Puerto Escondido, a few years ago. The city has somewhat of a reputation as a higher crime area.

Ask yourself this question; would you do this in Miami or LA? If not, don't do it in Puerto Escondido either.

Thanks for the input. I told my friend and he also says thanks. I have been hearing bad things about that area for a year now so was concerned. I appreciate the answers from everyone. Thanks, Norma
