DF to Merida Bus

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello, Does anyone have first hand experience in taking a first class bus from DF to Merida? Is there one that is especially fast? I can only find one that takes 20 hours. Thanks in advance for any responses. Tony

It is a long way. My bus book says that ADO and ADO GL make the run in 19 hours, around $90 one way. If UNO runs that route, it would probably be more comfortable, but more money and not much of a time savings. Consider flying, it may not cost that much more. I hate long bus rides, although you would see lots of countryside.

I do not recommend night travel on that route, for security reasons, but obviously a 19 hour trip will be largely at night. Campeche and Chiapas have a bad reputation in that way, although I have not read much about bus robberies lately. Probably not a huge consideration, just something else to consider in deciding whether to fly or take the bus.

Try www.ticketbus.com.mx to get the current schedule and departure times for busses between Mexico City and Merida. Input 'Mexico Tapo' (the eastern bus terminal in DF) for your point of departure. Only ADO and ADO-GL make the direct run. ADO is regular first class and ADO-GL has slightly (very) more legroom. Both are very reliable. Looks like there are 7 departures daily on that route.

Richard and I have slightly different oinions on safety of travel. He is more conservative. I spent 3 years in Campeche traveling back and forth to northern Veracruz on ADO and ADO-GL and never had a problem (or knew of anyone else who did). Traveling on busses at night is far more secure than driving your own car at night.

If you've got more money than time, Richard's suggestion of flying is right on.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. Since this is a 20 hour ride, the busses probably leave later so one can sleep. I tend to be more like you Ed, driving at is a no no but I would more likely do it in a bus. We just looked up the cost of a flight - more than $300US R/T from DF to Merida. Only slighly less than the flight from San Francisco to DF! Since I'm looking at a $1200 flight bill we may change to Nayarit. Again
thanks again for the posts. Tony
