Cozumel Questions

Daughter and her family will be going to Cozumel in mid-July to stay at a "villa" a few kilometers north of the airport. Wife and I avoid tourist spots, so we know nothing of Cozumel. Anybody know about taxi availability, costs, ... car rental (we presume) would be sky-high???

One of the forum members lives on Cozumel and has a great website so you could start out there. http://www.cozumelmycozumel.com/

Cozumel is a great place with lots to do of the non-traditional non-touristy variety. You will no doubt want to stay away from main street when cruise ships are in town!!

Have a great time on a great Island!!

we rented a jeep in Cozumel for a day about a year and a 1/2 ago. It was about $40 US for the day. Nothing fancy, open top jeep.

Cozumel is waaaaaay tooo touristy for us. The kids said "Mom, this isn't Mexico!"

Better late than never. Heh Heh. Sorry about that. Um, let's see. Car rentals are not all that expensive on Coz unless you rent on the cruiseship pier. Where you will get Royally Ripped. There are places one block back from the ferry pier downtown, independently owned businesses, that rent VW convertibles in excellent condition for as little as $25/day if you rent 3 days or more. I don't think that is outrageous at all.

Cozumel is touristy if you hang out with the other tourists. Fortunately, the cruiseships use blatant scare tactics to discourage passengers from venturing anywhere on the island where the cruise company can't easily extract a sizeable kickback. And most cruisers apparently fall for this. Too bad for them. Too good for you if you're independent-minded and willing to get off on your own and away from the pack.

There are plenty of lovely, laid back spots that are wonderful to visit. And the town of San Miguel itself is fun and fascinating. But get off the downtown main drag and venture back on the little side streets. That's where you'll see the real Cozumel. Which really hasn't changed all that much from it's old, charming self despite the enormous influx of cruise passengers.
