Cold in Merida

I just had to post this as there is always so much talk of how hot Merida is and how it never cools off. I actually believed that myself as it has always been warm on my many visits.

Tonight we arrived in Merida from the coast and it was definitely not hot, probably in the mid 70's. As the sun went down it got downright cold, we went out to go shopping at the Mega in our jeep with screen windows and we had the heater on full blast the whole time. Who could believe it? We don't have the heater on in the rig but it is a little chilly in here and we do have all the windows closed and the fans off.

We weren't bundled up, all our winter clothes are in suck-em-up bags behind the couch, but we did put on jackets with our shorts. The locals are all in big coats, some in puffy ski jackets.

So, when a norte is blowing it gets cold here in Merida. Amazing!

It´s funny you say that about Merida. The longer we stay here the more our preconceptions prove false. Merida during the day in the mid-70s must be great if the sun is out. If the weather were like that usually in the winter, I know where the Bubbas would be living at that time of year. Maybe January and February are good months to be there after all.

Speaking of preconceptions, my wife has been in San Cristobal at 7,000 feet for the past three weeks and tells me the weather in January there has been spectacular with bright sunshine and temperatures in the 70s as a rule during the day. Meanwhile, at Lake Chapala it has been chilly and cloudy with intermitent rain for about a week now. Pretty miserable and depressing.

When my wife remarks as to the wonderful January weather to locals in San Cristobal they always respond, yes but beware of the "helado" (or gélido) meaning the dangerous black ice that can accumulate on streets and sidewalks there at night. Oh well, build a fire and stay inside until 10:00AM I say.

That's no problem for me as I try to never leave my bed in single digits.

It was chilly all night, I added a throw to the cotton blanket on the bed and wished I had gotten my hot water bottle for my feet.

Today it is raining off and on. Another minor myth, that it never rains over here in the dry season. The mosquitoes are pretty bad though, that is known and hasn't changed. It's cool, in the mid 70's. One thing I noticed was that even when it was chilly last night, my humidity gauge said the humidity was almost 100%, and it hadn't started raining yet. It's cold and muggy, everything feels damp including the sheets and my clothes when I put them on. Interesting and different than any of my previous trips here.

When we were visiting San Cristobal and Chiapas we bought a wonderful chimenea for just these kind of days in Merida. We get to use it about four times a year, but every time it is a treat. It is set up on our patio. We did get a real funny look from the man we bought it from when we told him that we lived in Merida.
