Clubs in San Cristóbal de las Casas

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi everybody - I'm Chris and I'll be moving to San Cristóbal de las Casas next fall to do research for my dissertation. While I will be working quite a bit, I would like, during my free time, to get out and see what I have read is a very beautiful area. I was curious if there are any hiking, biking, or outdoor clubs of any kind, whether they are run by expats or locals. If there are, does anybody have any contact information for any of them?

Thanks for the help.

If I were you I would not worry about hooking up with locals of any stripe in San Cristóbal de Las Casas during the course of your dissertation work. Certainly you should not worry ahead of time as to where you might find kindred souls to accompany you on various outdoor activities in and about the Jovel Valley. When you get there you will find that if you are open to meeting others whether local or foreign, mestizo or indigenous, people are accepting of strangers and will be pleased to show you the ropes. It is, however, important that you seek out others who can acquaint you with local customs as there are places you do not wish to intrude without a proper introduction.

Forget clubs. Especially forget clubs.

We have lived in San Cristóbal since 2006 and are not particularly gregarious. It is a fine town in which to make friends.
The countryside there is beautiful as you surmise but you need to be cognizant of where you are. how you got there and how you get out of there.
