Chatumal Bay

After doing a search on Chetumal I learned that Chetumal Bay is one of the most polluted bodies of water of Mexico and Belize. I have been swimming in it for over 3 weeks now and have to worry about how bad is it. On the surface it looks like a pristine body of water but have noticed areas of stiff foam under certain windy conditions and just figured it was some runoff. Back where I'm from (New Bedford, Massachusetts) we value dearly our water resources and pay more for sewage treatment than actual water consumption.
I do like the area and would like to build here but does that mean I have to stay out of the water ?

Guadalajara´s MURAL newspaper for April 7, 2006 reported that, according to Mexican government reports, Chetumal Bay is the single most polluted body of water in all of coastal Mexico. There were a number of other areas in the Caribbean, Gulf and Pacific that are very polluted. You will find no public warnings at the beaches to the best of my knowledge.
