My wife & I will be in the Tulum area in a few weeks. Does anyone know of good places for birding that area? Also we will want to do some snorkeling, any info on a beach were the reef is closest so we could swim out? All help would be appreciated--THANX TIM

Birding is excellent around the Cobá ruins and on the road to them. To get there take the same road that goes to the beaches of Tulum and go west instead of east. We often see toucans and parrots in flight at dusk on that road. There are marshes and wetlands near the ruins that have a lot of birds, fairly high jungle around them that have lots of tropical and migrant birds.

The reef is deeper along the beaches from south of the Tulum ruins to Sian Kaan preserve. So, more wave action after storms less fish close to the surface. Snorkeling is better in the bays with shallow reefs, these are usually closer to shore as well. Akumal Bay is excellent as is Half Moon Bay and most of the small bays south of Akumal to about Xel Ha. Some places to check out are Tankah (any of the 3), Soliman, San Francisco, Akumal Sur, Akumal Aventuras and the main Akumal Playa (continue to the left there after the arches to get to Half Moon Bay and Yal Ku lagoon).

Thanx for the info. We will be staying at Copal Cababas for 4 nites south of the ruins, then 3 nites at tankah bay area so that should work well. Does anyone know much about the Sian Ka An reserve. Is it worth taking a look? Thanx again -Tim -
