Airport near Tulum

Can't Post | Private Reply
There has been talk for several years about building an airport near Tulum. Now I understand President Fox just approved construction of an international airport near Tulum.
Does anyone have any idea of where this might actually be located near Tulum?

One of the areas considered is a property on the Tulum/Cobá road just inland from Tulum. As you say, the idea has been bandied about for years so even if it does happen, I don't look for it anytime soon. Pipe dreams are cheap. The building is expected to cost about $30 million usd to begin with.

I have heard the same as Jim, on the Cobá road. Also that it is not immediate even in the mexican sense. Remember that Fox is a short timer now and anything real will depend on his successor as well as who is in office in QRoo. It probably will happen but the when of it could be a long time.

Now, I am very fond of the Tulum/Coba area but in terms of putting in an international airport there I am reminded of Gertrude Stein's famous saying about Oakland. There is no there there.

Hell, they can't even repair the Coba-Tulum road much less build an airport. As Jonna implies, Fox is a lame duck who will gladly tell you blue is red. Get over it.

I wonder if the new airport will be complete before the “bullet train” from Cancun to Tulum starts service in 2008 ?

I was out the Cobá road the other day, at least as far as Uh May, not sure I spelled that right Mimi and I privately call it Oh My since neither of us can pronouce mayan anyway. They have paved it most of that way, there were sections that looked like the old Cobá road, but there is a lot of work going on. Two europeans were found murdered out there a few weeks ago, a spanish woman and her italian boyfriend. Rather brutal, I heard a machete was used.

Anyway, if you have seen the govt plans for the Riviera Maya you would know why an international airport down there makes perfect sense. The plan estimates a population for Akumal of 250k people! Who knows what parts of it will really happen but that is the plan. As I mentioned before, many are calling it the second conquest in that large Spanish hotel chains have bought most of the coast. There is also lots of money laundering going on along here, the end result though is that massive development is going to happen. There will be a there here.

It doesn't exactly sound like the there that may eventually be there is the kind of there that would improve on the there that is already there and I believe Jonna would agree with that there.

Don´t know how fast the airport will be going in but as of now, I´m told it will be 14 kilometers out on the Coba road and then 6 Kilometers north of that.
(I saw a map with gov´t owned property at that location).
Also they are in the process of widening and resurfacing the coba road but only for the 1st 15 kilometers. coincidence???
