I sat next to a DEA agent on a flight out of Merida and he said his group encountered 19 checkpoints between Belise and Merida due to a crackdown on illegals coming in from the south. It must be working.

I just finished driving the entire Yucatan , between Escarciga to Merida there was 1 military checkpoint...between Merdia and Cancun there was 1 military checkpoint, 1 entering Chetumal and 1 from Chetumal to Escarcega along the Guatemalan border....Drove many secondary roads and no checkpoits...no problems at any checkpoint, waived on every stop although locals were searched....
