Shelley, There is an abundance of restaurants in Mazatlan, including a whole lot of new ones this season. You can take the green Sabalo-Centro bus from the door of the Mayan Palace and it will take you right through the Golden Zone area and all the way to the Centro Market in downtown. Depending what type of food you are looking for you will have no trouble finding something great anywhere along the route. In fact, just next door to your hotel to the south is the Hotel Torres Mazatlan, where the restaurant has a great menu and super food. My husband sings and plays keyboard, providing dinner and dancing music on Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights at Heathers Place Restaurant, where you can get a really good shrimp dinner special for under $10.00 as well as other good home cooked meals and yummy desserts. It is directly across the street from the Oceano Palace...and isn't terribly far from where you will be. (7 minutes on the bus maybe) Heather's is a Wifi hotspot so you will see laptops on the tables, especially at breakfast time. Also in the Golden Zone and getting good reviews is the newly opened Brasil Restaurant. It is an all you can eat buffet with about 15 kinds of meat. We have yet to try it but friends tell us it's worth the visit. Panchos (on the ocean) in the GZ, is a good restaurant for all meals, but we like it for lunch and always take our visitors there at least once...I love the flaming tequila cheese dish served with bread but they also have an extensive menu. The breakfast at the Azteca Inn across from the Playa Mazatlan, is a well-kept local secret (business type breakfast crowd) for a big hearty meal to start the day. In the evenings the Plazuela Machado is not to be missed, located close to Olas Altas beach area and not too far from the central market and home of the famed, historic Angela Peralta Theatre (another must see). There is an abundance of restaurants on the plaza and in surrounding area. The Plaza Machado is a traditional family (and now foreigner's) gathering place to hang out, eat or watch a performance and listen to music, especially on weekends. The ambiance at night is wonderful with the special lighting and historic buildings as a backdrop. Don't miss that area, as it is a direct contrast from the Golden Zone area and perfectly safe to walk around. The last bus departs el Centro near 10 pm or maybe even earlier so you may have to take a taxi back to your hotel if you have a late evening in the Plaza. The Sabalo-Centro bus runs along Angel Flores (about 2 short blocks from the Plaza) back to the central market and on to your hotel area via the Golden Zone. Don't miss a trip to Stone Island (Isla de la Piedra). The departure is from Playa Sur area, near where the cruise ships dock and it's 15 pesos roundtrip per person on the panga and about 30 pesos for the taxi truck at the other side.... or you can buy a day tour and likely be picked up right at your hotel. There is a new booklet just out called the "I Love Mazatlan Visitors Guide 2007". It should be available in any number of locations and has discount coupons in it as well as a little map and the bus routes you will need. I picked up a copy at Heathers Place Restaurant so I know she has them for now. Enjoy Mazatlan and be ready for all those time-share pitches you will encounter in your neighborhood. Marlene
