Webcam from the Beach

One of the hotels on our beautiful beach has a webcam set up. For those of you in the ice and snow anticipating your vacation, it is fun to check out the people on the beach.

It takes a minute or two to figure it out but once you do, you can set the views to look up and down the beach, see the vendors at work, and people working on their tans. It is a beautiful day today; enjoy.

Marlene,

Great site! I just flew back from Dallas where it was snowing. What a great fix. We're enjoying a sunny day at Chapala but nothing compares to the great beaches, especially in Maz.

Hope to drive back out soon. With all the amenities and facilities available for tourism why do do think Maz isn't more visited by Norte tourists?

Shameless self-promotion:

Hi UD, hope is well over your way. Today is our first really warm day in weeks. The webcam will capture scantily clad tourists on the beach today for sure! They have been waiting for a day like this.

Your question about tourism is a good one. Our best tourism numbers come from within the country of Mexico it seems. I have some theories but who knows how accurate they would prove to be. My former travel agency co-workers back in Canada tell me that the travellers are venturing to the destinations offering flights to all inclusive destinations such as Dominican Republic, Cuba, Cancun etc. Mazatlan does not have a great all inclusive set up for some reason. The food quality and service seems to be lacking somewhat in the few properties that offer all inclusive. Another thing, we don't have any large hotel chains here. If we had a Sheraton, a Hilton, a Hyatt or similar I am sure we would capture all kinds of business conferences and upscale packaged tours from north of the border like the other resorts. (Cancun and Ixtapa clean up in this area)

We have miles of beautiful beaches and many upscale restaurants and hotels. Mazatlan has so much potential for tourism, as the prices are better here than in the slick resorts. (For example, ocean front hotels with swimming pool, restaurant, etc along the beautiful stretch of beach known as Playa Norte, for as low as $250.00 pesos a night) As you have discovered in your visits, Mazatlan is a wonderful working class port city. Costs of living, while rising as every else, are still more reasonable than in the shinier tourist resorts. Tourists can definitely save money here if they are astute and ask where the bargains are. For example, Carnaval starts tomorrow and hubby spotted an ad in today's paper from a nice hotel property in the GZ offering Pacifico beer for $15.00 pesos each. That is a low price for the Golden Zone. The bargains seem to be there if you pay attention. And no, UD, we don't recommend anyone attend a time share presentation for a free anything!

I will keep you posted on how Carnaval goes, but the weather has certainly taken a turn for the better today. The bandstands are setting up, the streets are becoming blocked with "beer tents", and the excitement is building. We live a block from the action, so ear plugs are in order! It will be a fun time once again. It is not too late for any of you to join the fun (noise)!

Hi Marlene ~

Was just skimming the Maz board and ran across your comments on all-inclusives. Last fall we came through Maz and stopped to check out one of our past favorite hotels on the beach, the Camino Real. We were surprised to see that it had been sold and had new operators operating it as an all-inclusive. Don't recall the name, but the new decor and name sure had a lot of Blue in it...8^).

Because it was off-season, we were able to negotiate a room for the night without meals by paying cash.

The Real had a great restaurant - don't know about the new one, as we hit the Shrimp Factory and a couple other favorite haunts before we left. The property appeared to be well-maintained, as it has been in the past as the Real.

Thanks for your comments. I remember when the Camino Real was THE place .... way up north...secluded and, well, exclusive. There are now so many resorts out that way now it is incredible really. I will have to stop by and let you know how the restaurant is these days, besides expensive, of course. Glad you like Mazatlān and enjoy the seafood here, as we do. We tend to buy shrimp from the Shrimp Ladies and take them to a nearby secret location to have them prepared for us gratis. They do this for locals (mainly downtown workers) who then buy a beverage while eating their own shrimp. Of course loud Sinaloan tunes, the lady that does "cleansings" and roving Rolex pedlars add extra fun to this adventure. It doesn't get much better.
