As far as I know there have been no problems getting into town from the airport, more to do with how some of the tourists were getting out to the airport to catch their flights home. There are different licenses and unions and they keep an eye on each other. From the airport you can take only an airport taxi, clearly marked with a yellow airplane logo, the airport combi shuttle (time share person usually climbs on board to search for potential customers, ignore them unless you want to listen) usually going all through the golden zone hotel areas before arriving in el Centro, or you can pre-book a transfer with Olé Tours over the internet. They will be there to meet you with a sign, and will drop you off right at your door for less than a taxi.
