Hurricane Lane passed very close to Mazatlan earlier today and made landfall a little to the North not long ago. We pretty much need a chain saw to clear the fallen trees from in front of our carport and parking area. Many of the city streets are heavily flooded and there is a panga stationed in a nearby Fracc. in case of emergencies. Cars have been abandoned in the roadways and there are many detours.
For the most part, electricity and telephone service has been stable all day with a few bumps this morning during the worst of the winds. The airport is closed and a few signs, satellite dishes and other flying objects in addition to trees falling, were reported around town. My brother-in-law is a photographer for the Noroeste and was called to work this morning despite the elements, so there will be a picture story in tomorrow's newspaper. He apparently dodged a flying rooftop antenna in el Centro so wasn't in the finest mood, but did get good pictures.
It's not over yet since the rain continues to pour down, but the wind has at least subsided. It will basically be flood reports throughout the weekend, and hopefully those living in less than rain-proof accommodations will have homes when this is over. It really has not been a good day to be a bird! Our thoughts are with relatives in Culiacan now as that is where Lane will visit next.
