RX DRUGS

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am working on my budget to move to Maz, this seems to be my biggest snag....the quotes on cost of drugs have been(by posters) 1) same as USA or 2) about 25% less.... my meds run about 800.00usa, without insurance (so far I still have insurance)....I also understand that IMSS is not good in Maz, but I think I can afford one of the private insurance plans....a member of this board says he has IMSS and free presciptions (has been on IMSS along time) but very few of MY drugs would continue to be prescriptions....
I have been a member for a while but this is my first post...any advice would be welcome.....thanks for this and ALL your other posts, has been very helpful....Joyce

The IMSS drug plan is pretty much of joke everywhere. Don't count on it.

There is no way to make a blanket statement about drug costs in Mexico vis-a-vis the USA. Some meds will cost less, some the same, and a few may cost more. Also, not all drugs sold in the USA are available in Mexico.

The only way to be sure is to bring your list of meds to a pharmacy in Mexico to get a quote.

I am not sure why you "understand that IMSS is not good in Maz." The people I know who have IMSS here speak highly of their experiences. A neighbor is being scheduled for a heart valve replacement. She is amazed at how quickly they have been able to carry out all the tests, etc that are necessary (3 weeks since the initial diagnosis, and I mean a multitude of tests) and they are working with specialists in another city where she will go for the actual surgery. Another friend had prostrate surgery last year. I think you should seriously consider IMSS if money is an object. As for drug prices, I can't help you but you might want to check your prescriptions against a list of drugs offered by the on-line pharmacy at http://www.maztravel.com/drugs/. The prices are probably somewhat higher than the discount pharmacies in town, but it will give you an idea. The listing shows the US name and the Mexican name of the drugs. Incidentally, www.maztravel.com is an excellent and informative site for informaation about Maz.

Thanks Dee for your input. My friends and relatives who use IMSS here have nothing bad to say about the system. It actually reminds me of Canada from what I have seen.

WOW...Thanks alot guys.....Thats why I like this site.....okay!!!!! IMSS for me, but I guess Meds are what I was afraid of , maybe I will feel soooo much better when I get there, that I won't need so much rx meds.... One question, are you allowed to use IMSS at the hospital in Mazatlan or will I have to go to Guadalarajara? Or some type of clinic? Thanks again..........Joyce
