I want to pass along a tip for a great seafood meal at a reasonable price. Whether you are visiting Mazatlán or just passing by on the highway make a stop in Villa Union just south of the Mazatlán Airport. Ask for directions to Cuchupetas, which is only a block or so off the main highway. It is really popular with locals, and it seems also with our State Governor from Culiacan. He often flies or trucks the Chef and a couple of his favorite waiters into functions and will dine on Cuchupetas seafood rather than eat what may be served at the event he is attending. He recently attended a function in Mazatlán during the Triathalon, and brought the whole works from the kitchen of Cuchupetas, including condiments, to the courtyard of a rather splashy resort. A friend of mine is the Food and Beverage Manager at this particular resort, and was rather relieved that the Governor took care of his own food and drink needs for the planned event, freeing her kitchen staff up to look after their own full house of guests. She had an interesting afternoon, as she ended up bartending for the Governor's crowd. He thoroughly enjoyed his Cuchupetas food as he always does. Newspapers covered the affair and some of you may have seen it. I guess this is one of the great perks of being the Governor. Certainly speaks volumes for the food at Cuchupetas. The breaded shrimp are to die for but there is so much more equally delicious and well priced. It is worth a trip out of Mazatlán for lunch or when taking someone to the airport. I wouldn't do it on a Sunday as that is a BIG dining day out with restaurants full to the rafters with families. Enjoy.
