Tony You will need at last a signed health certificate from your vet. In the State of California these are on bright pink paper, you can't miss 'em. It will list your dog's name, breed if any, DOB if known, status of his/her/it's vaccinations, address where you will be staying, if known. Your vet will sign it and include his/her vet license number. There is an international health certificate authorized by the USDA that vets are supposed to have on hand. Some do, some don't. If it's a large vet practice, or a practice that has a lot of dog/cat breeders who ship animals internationally, they'll have it. The CA veterinary health certificate is good for up two 2 weeks prior to the date of departure. This is mostly an issue for airlines who want to make sure the health certificate is current. Realistically? I don't know anyone who has ever been asked for much in the way of documentation on their dog or cat when they drove across the border. However, now that I've made that blanket statement I'm sure there will be a lot of "it happpened to me" replied :-D. I do know people who have had to present valid documentation when flying into Mexico with animals, but not so much when driving. And had to get their papers validated by a Mexican vet when flying backout!! Have your dog's vacinations up to date, a valid health certificate from your vet and any document(s) related to your dog's license and you should be fine.
