I used to go to both the Pastelería Madrid AND the Ideal while staying in the Hotel Montecarlo, Uruguay # 69., starting back in '92. I always thought the Madrid a good solid bakery, but I preferred the Ideal. But one of the advantages was/is? that the Madrid served coffee and light food. I don't know the status on their coffee and food nowadays, as we haven't stayed in the Hotel Montecarlo since 2004. Another good bakery was/is El Molino, on 16 de septiembre, not far from the larger Ideal matriz. El Molino at some point underwent an ownership change, and the quality of both bread and coffee suffered greatly. I don't know if it has been restored. Separately, and out of the Historic part of Centro, over in the barrio of San Juan and Buen Tono, west of Eje 3 San Juan de Letrán, is La Pilarica, on Calle López, just south of the corner of Calle Ayuntamiento. We have so far been there only twice, and barely sampled their breads and pastries, but they seem to be of a quality a considerable niche above what I remember of the Madrid and the Ideal. (NOTE WELL: all these bakeries are worth visiting and trying their products. The good part is that you can walk some of the calories off going from one to another. I wouldn't pass final judgement on any until I have given all a fair trial with extensive sampling. Anonimo - Thank you for the recommendation! We are willing to try out any place once (or twice). I agree, nothing lost in trying a new bakery especially when you have to walk to go to them and then have an excue to spend a day browsing downtown ;) ~~~~~~ Enjoying life in northern D.F. with our family of Americans and chilangos.
