8 excursions just outside Mexico City

The SF Gate, home of the San Francisco Chronicle published an article by Christine Delsol that describes several trips within 2 to 3 hours (or less) from Mexico City. With the exception of Valle de Bravo and Cuernavaca, they are not the common destinations visited by most foreign tourists. Overall, a short and informative article with the usual biased comments made by those that are not familiar with Mexico.

Nice, but they placed a couple of destinations in the wrong states.

Nice, but they placed a couple of destinations in the wrong states.

They certainly did. After all, Tlaxcala City is logically in Tlaxcala State, and Tepoztlan is in Morelos. I´m glad the article mentioned Malinalco, which is a lovely little town, with a lovely main plaza, a great museum, and a unique archaeological site.

Cuetzalan is 2.30 h from Mexico City??? Took us more than 3 to 4 hours hours to get there from Puebla. Is there a short cut' It is not far in km but the curves slow down the trip and when it is foggy the road is really dangerous.

Sounds like a an exciting trip. If one doesn't have a car, what's the safest way to get there?

Thake a tour bus from Puebla for sure, I do not know about Df. There is a regular bus service but if you cannot take lots of curves you may want to reconsider.

Does the tour bus take a road with fewer curves than the regular bus? I can take curves with the aid of some Dramamine.

I do not know but considering where Cuetzalan is I doubt one road is much better than another. If you can get a seat in the front of the bus you probably would be better off than in the back. Get some Dramomine if you do not lie curves. The road starts pretty straight for quite a while but as you start getting in the mountains, the road gets more and more beautiful and more and more curvy.
You should really go up there it is very pretty and the food is delicious.

Maybe the tour buses have better drivers than the local buses do! I've wanted to visit Cuetzalan ever since seeing a Mexican movie filmed there, which I saw some years ago. Thanks for your description of the journey. Any place that is both beautiful and has good food has my vote.

We live about 45 minutes from Valle de Bravo in mexico state, very nice.
