short vacation to mexico

I have a week free to go to mexico. I booked a flight from Guadalajara feb. 4th to 12. My plan is to stay in guadalara for 2 or 3 days and maybe look at lake chapala area and maybe san miguel. Any cheap rental suggestions? I'm not fussy, just clean and safe. Not much time I know but enough for me for first trip to get some idea of mexico. I appreciate any input.

San Miguel is many hours from Guadalajara, so visiting there will cost you a day or two of your short visit. Maybe better to save San MIguel for another trip. Guadalajara and surrounding areas can easily fill a week.

Check out Hotel Ajijic (on the Plaza) (376-766-0383 for staying here. A friend found a "special" for $35 a night and was there last week. Nothin' fancy, but clean and convenient. Usually low prices anyway. Laguna B & B is another.

I second the notion that a week is not enough time to explore San Miguel, Guadalajara and the lakeside area. Driving time between the San Miguel area and Ajijic is about 5 hours. Probably the same by bus. If you do take a bus, the best ones are ETN and Primera Plus. Very comfortable.
Have a good vacation!

Jasonfree- Laguna B&B in Ajijic, Lake Chapala, is $35/night in winter season. Clean, comfortable rooms of decent size with their own bathrooms. Great breakfasts! They have a phone in the common area where you can make free phone calls anywhere in the US or Candada. Furnishings are simple (no TV, no chocolate on your pillow) but attractively decorated. Also, Laguna is only about 2 blocks to the main Plaza, and 1 block to the Carretera (main drag through town) where you can catch buses along the Lake shore to the other communities. Just Google Laguna B&B, Ajijic and you'll get their website.

Here is our photojournal blog where you can find lots of info about Ajijic, the Lake Chapala area, and Guadalajara (as well as San Miguel Allende). Just go to the Index of Topics to find what you want:

Buena suerte, and have fun!
