"progressive"? dinners

Can't Post | Private Reply
Are there any cooking/eating clubs that have the dinners that start at one house with the appetizer and go from house to house for each different course? What about carroling at Christmas?

"When food is there believe me they will come"

Well, maybe, but only if you serve 2 for 1 drinks.

I suppose the "progressive" dinner thing is me regressing. I just bought a fondue pot. Progressive dinners and fondues were a good time. I think a rerun is worthwhile.

I think it's a great idea -- count me in. Maybe if you post this idea on the food forum you'll get some gourmet cooks to join in :)

Wait! A progressive dinner sort of hinges upon everyone showing up at the same place on time, does it not? This is Mexico, where herding cats would be a much easier endeavor.

Don't worry Jennifer.

It's alway fun to watch the newbies come up with these ideas. It gives the rest of us a chuckle.

The ones who think they can come and change things here are the ones we want to bonk!! on the head :)

What a sweetie you are. Actually throwing out lots of different ideas is the only way that you can get feed back to find out what may work and what may not. I really have no desire to change anything. I only want to meet new people, make new friends and have a great time. A progressive dinner doesn't mean dozens of people, just your closest and most fun friends who like to cooK,... and eat. As far as caroling goes, that could just be sitting around drinking margaritas and singing Frostie the Snowman.

Kip,

Congrats on a progressive idea. You don't have to invite the ones who want to diss it. The others who say they'll participate will either show up on time or catch up. Vote me in 5 years from now when I can become a newbie. I'll glady take a bonk on the head to be there.

Kip, I hope you took my post as one made in jest. Living in Morelia and not amid gringos, my sister and I entertained.....and dismissed the same notion of a progressive dinner between our two houses since we had a fairly similar guest list and our houses were a block apart. The idea was to have appetizers and paella here, and then move to her house for a sweet table and coffee, but upon contemplation, we realized it was just too difficult to execute, given that people show up at the darndest times.

Mexico thrives on change. Sometimes we adopt gringo habits, and sometimes Mexico changes you. If chang weren't a part of Mexico, there would be no Spanish turrones at Christmas, there would be no Navidad, and we'd still be toasting bugs around a campfire speaking what we now quaintly refer to as an indigenous tongue.

Christmas carols....hmmm that was one of the things I really missed my first year here.

What you describe sounds nice. Somehow I had this picture in my minds eye of a bunch of gringos out on the street doing Christmas carols in a Mexican neighborhood.

¿Porque no?

Kip;

One of the first things I learned about Mexico, almost 50 years ago, is that you can do/try just about anything. As long as you don't insult, injure or cause civil disorder, why not? The Mexican people, while steeped in tradition, are very flexible and the Gringos down here are ready for just about any diversion.

No sweat Jennifer, I took it in the spirit intended. You have to work pretty hard to make me think you're trying to hurt me, and I know you wouldn't.

I would think that if one were interested enough, you could get a group together and find a way to tweak a traditional Christmas posada into a carol session without too much trouble. Could make for an interesting combination.
