graffiti-eh!

i don't know if this has been discussed here or not, as it relates to the chapala region. on tob it has been constantly raised-specifically ajijic, like it's the only place in all of mexico where this occurs.
there are a lot of people on this board from other parts of mexico. i'm just wondering if any of you besides me has made this observation.
gang graffiti is minor in the overall scheme of things. in travelling around mexico, i have seen it even in the smallest of whistle stops. therefore i have concluded, that over the past several years it has become a part of the youth culture of the whole country. a few gringos and canuckle heads with nob generated, pie in the sky schemes are not going to affect this one iota.
in my "mexican" neighbourhood there is very little of it. i suspect , based on one incident, why this is so. the cholo responsible for this dastardly deed has not been seen here for a while-hmmm?

It's a minor problem here in Lerdo. It seems to be more just vandalism rather than gang markings.

Graffiti is not unique in Mexico you see it in Europe as well. Last July while in Paris I did a lot of walking in the fanciest parts of town which I usually do not do. There was graffiti on the chimneys of beautiful 19 centtury buildings all over the place. The amazing part of it was that all access to these roofs from the building is difficult for an outsider so the kids had to go from roof to roof to be able to do it. It seems that the most dangerous, the highest places had graffiti. It obviously was a game for the kids to show off their agility.
On the street there was very little graffiti, may be it was erase quickly although it is difficult as the building are made out of limestone and the graffti would have to be sandblasted. Some of the graffiti was very artistic as well. In those areas ther are no gang living there but they come via subway get off the subway and come to practice their art on one of the most beautiful residential area in Paris.
Pedro you may not have any within a few houses of you but I can assure you that there is plenty in Chapala as well. Our block in San Cristobal does not have any either because we live next to a midwife and people come and go all night but you go off one block and the houses get painted all the time. I have not had any on my house yet but it is only because the kids have not thought about it or because some "tough guy "lives next door.

i was in guad a coupla weeks ago and noted that the second stories of some of the buildings were graffitied as well.obviously a serious pursuit as they would have had to carry a ladder with them in the middle of the night-jaja!
yes there is tonnes of graffiti in chapala-just not my hood.

Graffiti is everywhere in Morelia, no matter the socio-economic status of the neighborhood. Much of it is gang tags.

Last week, for the first time, I saw an anti-graffiti truck parked outside a business in the Centro Histórico. It appeared that the vehicle was there to erase graffiti, but maybe the driver was just buying a cup of coffee.

Possibly gangs, but the graffiti I am aware of the source of is pure vandalism by teenagers in the neighborhoods.

A couple years ago I saw that someone had tagged the acueducto in Morelia. That was beyond tolerance finally. The graffiti was cleaned up immediately and I haven't seen it reappear on the acueducto again. Defacing that could lead to the disappearance of the responsible parties, permanently. But graffiti in other places is still a problem here.

From my exprience, I doubt that there are loose teenagers doing graffiti and vandalism without being connected to a gang. In our neighborhood a kid putting graffiti on walls without the ok of the gang risks his or her life. Most neighborhood have gangs and God help the teeenager who comes in from a different area uninvited.

There is graffiti all over where I live in Providencia and it isn't gang related. Gangbangers around here get rousted on sight by the police. They know better to try their BS here.

There no gangs in the neighborhood near the Champs Elysees either but that does not prevent the gang from the other areas from coming and doing graffitis all over the place. The French cops are not an easy bunch and they are helpless anyways.
If you are in a gang territory other gangs will not come in and if there are no gangs some gangmembers from another place will come. Lonely teenagers are rarely caught doing graffitis, they are cowards and usually do it in a group.

In San Cristobal we woke up on Christmas day or New Year´s I forget which one, finding out that the whole façade of the beautiful City Hall was covered with political graffitis. The city immediately painted over it. But everyone in town was furious at the guards"guarding" the Palacio at night. I guess they were either tired or out for a drink that night...You have to be awake or there to catch anyone..
