driving to Zihuatenejo/Ixtapa from Ajijic in Dec

Hi. Did a search on this, but nothing new. I will be driving to Zihuatenejo/Ixtapa from Ajijic in Dec. I was planning to take Hwy 54D to coastal Hwy 200. Are the hwys maintained? Is 200 a toll hwy yet? Thanks

Addition: I did some reading on other posts and it seems that Coastal Hwy 200 is a winding , dropoff laden road. Would taking HWY 15E (not 15D) to Zacupa, then down HWY37 to Playa Azul and take HWY 200 the rest of the way be better?

Hello,

You said:>>> Did a search on this, but nothing new. I will be driving to Zihuatenejo/Ixtapa from Ajijic in Dec. I was planning to take Hwy 54D to coastal Hwy 200. Are the hwys maintained? Is 200 a toll hwy yet? Thanks<<<<

What I would do is take the autopista from Ajijic to Morelia, then from Morelia to Uruapan but just before Uruapan take the autopista south to Nueva Italia and from there to just before Lazaro Cardenas turning south to Ixtapa which would then give you about 91 km of coastal highway to Ixtapa-Zijuatanejo.

About six or seven years ago when they were constructing the autopista from Lazaro Cardenas through Nueva Italia to Uruapan I drove from Playa Azul to Morelia after driving the coastal route south all the way from Colima just to see what it was like. The coastal route is beautiful but narrow, with multitudinous curves and of course slow. Many long stretches of 40 km per hour or less because of the curves. Many little beaches to explore, many little fishing villages, etc. Beautiful, but I was in no mood to drive it back north. By that time I was really tired.

The autopista from Lazaro Cardenas to Uruapan was under construction but was far enough along that the detours were few and far between. The drive was a piece of cake to Nueva Italia and from there to Morelia and no tolls were yet being collected. I was taken with Nueva Italia as a possible retirement location.

You should find the drive pleasant, fast, and safe but probably costly. I drove from Lazaro Cardenas to Zamora in one day of about 8 to 9 hours. South from Colima to Lazaro Cardenas on the coastal route took two or three days, so long ago I can't remember.

Have a pleasant trip.
