dental care

After my last dental checkup I was told I needed a tooth extracted from lower right jaw and then a bridge put in. Projected costs are $2600 out of my pocket. I am thinking that if I could find a qualified dentist in the Chapala area, I could save money on the dental work and look over the real estate market while there. What do members of this forum think and do you have any dentist recommendations.

There are plenty of good dentists in this area and the amount you save might easily pay for an exploratory trip down here depending upon airfare, length of trip, where you stay, etc.

There are many Dentists at Lakeside, but damn few I would want working on me.

The following are the two most highly recommended on these forums.

John gave you the best dentists. There are cheaper ones but you won't go wrong with dental work from these two recommendations.

Below is a copy/paste of a post I made on this very subject back in November. As a follow up, we head down to Guadalajara next week to have the work completed:

Kathy recently visited a dentist here in Albuquerque. First of all, she didn't care for his personality and really didn't care for his radical treatment approach. Without going into all of the details, he wasn't interested in saving all the teeth that she has and was definitely interested in paying off his student loans.

I approached a number of members of this forum for suggestions and/or referrals. We contacted Dr. Barragan and sent him copies of the x-rays and proposed treatment plan from here. It turned out that, the required work was outside of Dr. Barragan's area of expertise. After emails going back and forth, he referred Kathy to two specialists in Guadalajara and he arranged an appointment with both for this past Monday. Kathy flew down last Sunday but was naturally apprehensive about what the treatment plan might be. This session was to be an examination and consultation by both specialists.

Prior to a thorough examination by each of them, she was given a complete cleaning and it was determined that she had some infection in her gums. Both specialists then performed examinations and these were followed by a joint consultation during which their treatment plan was laid out in detail. Both specialists were extremely nice and exhibited a real concern for retaining as many teeth as possible with the least patient stress. From a mental standpoint, this was a relief to Kathy and the really great news was that their treatment plan involved saving all but maybe one or two teeth.

Secondary to the above positives is the incredible difference in cost. The NOB dentist had estimated an approximate cost of $9KUSD including the initial charge for diagnosis and copies of x-rays. The cost of Monday's session was $800MXN and the estimate for the remaining work is $4000MXN. Even with plane fare and hotel costs, it isn't hard to figure out the cost justification for traveling this distance!

The information on these two specialists follows. By the way, they both speak English.
Dr. Edilberto Valdivia (Prostodontist, rehabilitation)
Dr. Yadira Macias (Periodontist)

Carlos F. Landeros 190
Colonia Ladrón de Guevara
In between México avenue and Reforma street. For reference, this address is located near the intersection of López Mateos Avenue and México Avenue.

01 333 616 0188
01 333 616 3062

Dr Valdivia is a gentleman probably in his 50's and speaks excellent English. Dr. Macias is a female probably in her 30's with lesser English skills but can certainly be understood. Great "chair side manners" and really caring people!

Neil

CG - Great info for everyone. And I'm happy to hear that your wife is so pleased with the outcome. Those greedy bastards NOB take advantage of every $$$ they can squeeze out of you.

While the difference in cost can be somewhat impressive, Kathy was far more impressed with caring shown by the Mexican specialists and the fact that they expressed that it was far more important to save as many of the healthy teeth as possible. Their treatment plan certainly will cause far less stress for her!

Since someone mentioned that you would have to factor in the flight and hotel costs, we looked at that two. Her first trip down for the examinations/consultations spanned three days, so we had the approx. $550 R/T airfare and two nights in a hotel approx. $160. This upcoming trip will be two R/T tickets that we arranged for under $1000 and we found what appears to be a great one bedroom apartment right in the heart of centro Tlaquepaque for $150/week. While the actual treatment is projected to be accomplished in four daily sessions, we plan on having a mini vacation by exploring and experiencing centro Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque and Tonala.

Have Lived in Ajijic full time for seven years. Have been a lurker on this board since its inception. Usually chinagringo is an irritant to me. Much like a fly or mosquito. Today, he truly responded and gave help to someone. These are his best posts ever. Why am I so small? Chinagringo, please take a pass on this question. fug

Just a quick follow-up to my previous post. The periodontal scraping/planning was done over four consecutive days by Dr. Yadira Macias. She used a topical anesthetic followed by an anesthetic injection with a very fine needle in each quadrant. Kathy experienced literally no pain during the treatment or afterwards. She was eating anything she wanted for lunch within an hour or so and never took so much as one Advil. Treatment is now finished and she goes back in three to six months for a follow-up check.

Allow me to throw my dentist into the mix.

Dr. Edgard Macias He is the owner of an office called Dental Express in Ajijic.

His e-mail is dr.edgardmacias@hotmail.com and he is a quick responder to e-mails.

He opened his clinic less than three years ago and it has expanded to the point that he has hired three additional dentists and they each have their own cubicle for dental work.

The quality of his work is exceptional and his prices are incredibly reasoneable.

I have switched six friends to him and they all love him.

Perfect English and decided to build his practice on fair prices, no receptionist, not office phone. He has cut down in other areas to be able to offer excellent services at probably the best prices in lakeside. Also has an onsite lab, so turnaround time is 24 hours or less.

Won't cost you anything to e-mail him and check him out. Good luck. fug
