What can't you find??

  | Private Reply
Well since we are talking about bagels and creme cheese I thought a new thread should
be opened on what we can't find down here and maybe some of us have found AFFORDABLE
solutions. I know if we want five dollar wheat thins we can go to Superlake. I am thinking
of mexican or cheaper imported products to substitute for expensive US/Can. imported
products.

I will start.

I like cheese and crackers any substitute for Wheat thins/ Triscuit smaller crackers?

Try Gamesa Habaneras Integral crackers - they come in small packages of 117 grms at around 5 pesos a package the last time I bought them You can sometimes even find them in SuperLake if you look carefully.

I love Triscuits, too. Have not found anything resembling them and when I need a Triscuit fix, Superlake is the only solution. Great topic. thanks. T

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I have not been able to find:

-CLR (for removing mineral/lime deposits)--not the spray (which has foaming detergents added) but the stuff in the bottle that you can use to clean the mineral build up in the dishwasher and washing machine. (Home "remedies" such as vinegar, etc. don't work.)
-Decent plastic wrap (i.e. Glad Cling Wrap).
-Spray & Wash Stain Stick (the stuff you can put on stains and wash the clothes later on. It works.)
-Terro Ant Killer in the little plastic containers--not messy, gets rid of the ants in the house, the only thing that works for me.
-Unscented laundry detergents and soaps. Once in awhile they are available, but not consistently. Even difficult to find toilet paper without fragrance!

I can help you with a couple of your questions, but not all. CLR in the spray is available at our local WalMart, but have not found it in the way you describe it here.

Plastic wrap here, basically sucks. I have tried all brands, but they just stick, do not tear properly. Once, I got so tangled up in plastic wrap, had to call my neighbor to come over and unroll me.

I have switched to aluminum foil. Do not buy Mexican aluminum foil. It covers nothing, as it is so thin that it breaks constantly. Buy only Reynolds Heavy Duty Aluminum foil.

Toilet paper, with no fragrance? The best is the Kirkland brand at Costco. No scent and in the wider roll that we are used to in the States, not some of the skinny brands we see here. Think you have to buy 48 rolls, but I usually do a 50/50 with a friend and still have over a years supply.

Thanks for asking my thoughts. Hope we hear from others. Best wishes, T

Plastic wrap - costco. We buy it even in the US. Commercial quality. One box will last most couples 3-4 years, but it's worth it.

CPR - I think costco sells this, too. Maybe its competitive brand. You'll end up buying 2-3 bottles, but I agree. The stuff works.

Since I survive on low or fat free, sugar free, salt free food, I have a really hard time finding things I like on a REGULAR basis. Costco sometimes has what I have come to enjoy but not always: Cabot's 50% fat free individually wrapped 3/4 oz. portions, real Spanish chorizo (turkey), Vitalicious muffin tops, and Nature's own sugar free bread, Fat Free Feta cheese, etc. etc. So, when we go to the US we take a couple of big coolers and stock up.

Is the plastic wrap Kirkland or another brand? I am willing to check it out. After so many disappointments with plastic wrap here, what is one final attempt? Thanks, T

Boy, Z are you out of touch. Wheat Thins and Triscuits were both 79.9 pesos today at Super Lake. For the regular size, not the grande. I love Triscuits, but it only took me a few seconds to put them back down. T

Kirkland label. But be warned: the size of the box is huge. It's made for commercial use - which also explains its high quality. It will outlive you. And after using it for awhile, you can never go back to Saran wrap or other standard grocery brands.

Thanks. Too funny. As a single person, I also expected to be outlived by Kirkland toilet paper and paper towels, not too mention their kitchen bolsas which come 200 to a box and I use, maybe one a week. T.

White Castles, good corned beef, Taco Bell, Jack In the Box's greasy tacos, Edge shaving gel, pastrami, Carmex lip balm, a big cast iron skilllet that does not cost a month's rent, decent bagels not round bread that looks like a bagel, a full bucket of KFC , not one that is less than half full, but the count is right. Think KFC kills their chickens in Mexico by starvation. Not good, but as expensive as in the States. That is my list for today. Will get started on tomorrow's additions, which I am certain you will be holding your breath to see. Grin. T

White Castles mini burgers? I had to tell one of my employee not to eat them at lunch because of the flatulence.
Corned Beef and Pastrami at Costco, but is it good - don't think so.
Edge shaving gel - I get shaving gel by Clinique from Fabricas or Liverpool. More expensive but better thangoing Mexican with a bar of soap.
What I would give for a cast iron skillet. I have a cast iron grill but, sadly, no skillet.
I've seen bagels at Superama - frozen. Not bad if you've forgotten what real bagels taste like.
KFC - forget it.
What I would give for Triskets or Wheat Thins.
I used to dream of Jimmy Dean's breakfast sausage. But it's either that or more blood pressure medicine.

Thanks for your response. Guess we agree. White Castles are only good after a night of binge drinking or when you know that you will be alone for several hours. Flatulence, big time. Cannot find Edge shaving gel anywhere, and I cannot afford the boutique stores that you suggest. Funny, a few years ago, I found EDGE down here, but have recently canvassed at least six places here in Lakeside. No shaving gel, and I do not like the Mexican version of shaving cream. One swipe seems to take it all off and if you need a second or third swipe, it is on bare skin. And life will go on. T

Forty plus years ago my electric shaver broke.
I tossed it in the trash and decided to grown a beard.
One of my smarter decisions.

As for KFC -- One of their chickens put me in the hospital for four days,
so no more KFC for me ever again.
There are four pollo al carbón places in Lerdo that I frequent (just finish one).
They all use small (young) chickens.
There is rotisserie place that has two sizes -- the same small ones and a larger one.

Soriana has a fairly good fish department,
but I wish I could find trout, real crab and fresh oysters and lobsters.

Here in Veracruz, we have trout everywhere, but real crab is disguised as land crab - lots of cartilage and little meat. I saw in one of the supermarkets some Alaskan King Crab legs and became faint over the price.
The waters in Mexico could be too warm for oysters and lobsters. Once again, I saw Maine lobsters for sale (frozen) in a local supermarket and the price, the price. I don't miss lobsters that much.

If you're missing breakfast sausages with flavor but no long list of toxic ingredients; just the good stuff, try Jones Farm Sausages, available in a big box of around 40 in the frozen food dept. at Costco, and for a higher price at good old SuperLake. Nuke 'em to unfreeze and fry up till brown. I like them better than Jimmy Deans.

"The waters in Mexico could be too warm for oysters..."

That may be true in your neck of the woods but not on the Pacific side. Oysters are readily available.... and pretty good. Not as good as Apalachicola, Fla. but then 'nothing' is.

YMMV
