What areas are the most vulnerable

for home invasions and/or burglaries? I have narrowed it down to two, but would like to hear your thoughts. fug

They can happen anywhere . They go in waves so right now Chapala Haciendas is being hit but then you will see an other area being hit.
You should look at the areas that have never been hit rather than the one that have, the list will be a whole lot shorter.

Do the research on Lakesidecrimewatch. You can go back thru the years. Generally Gated Communities are the safest because they are gated and some have 12 hour guards while others have 24 hour guards. Many have electronic gates.

Burglars look for easy access and those easy access houses are on local streets. Most have no razor wire.

They are not policeman and don't get paid as such, but they're out there at night doing their rounds looking for those burglars or suspicious people. They can call the Police and their Supervisors of their Guard Service. Some guard service companies have in their contracts that Police surveil these Communities every so many hours as well as the Guar Servoce Supervisors.

Some Communities, such as ours are protected by razor wire and extensive lighting. Burglars look for easier targets.

Lived here full-time for 7 years. Was not asking as a prospective person moving here. My best guess is Chapala Haciendas and Lower La Floresta. Both of them are ungated, have a myriad of entrances and exits, none of which are protected, many of the homes are unwalled and sitting wide open and both of them have some fairly high end homes, they also have a lot of one story homes, which are easier to access. Just based upon my observations over the last seven years. You may feel free to disagree, and for some reason, I suspect that some of you will. Have a great day. fug

It sounds as though life is more dangerous at Lakeside than it is in big, bad Mexico City, where my only protection from prospective thieves is living in an apartment building where visitors must be buzzed in.

"I rob banks because that's where the money is." . . . Willie Sutton

Burglars rob houses in areas where they think it is more profitable. The more affluent areas will always be targets.

If you don't want to be a victim, live in a poorer area where it is assumed you don't have anything worth the trouble of stealing.

ain't that the turth. Villa Nova used to have guards from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and chained shut the other two access points so that everyone would have to enter or leave by the main entrance during that time period. What a waste of money. Rarely saw a guard. They were either walking around somewhere or fast asleep in the guard shack.. Due to an issue with our well a few years ago, the guards were cut to not increase fees to property owners. No noticeable difference. fug

Appreciate your sense of humor, especially since I am from Detroit, a wonderful place to be from, but you effectively killed my topic regarding places in Lakeside. Let me see if I can give it a kick start. Maybe or maybe not. fug

Yes, it was acidic humor but perhaps the topic killed itself from lack of interest. What the heck, I didn't even get a zing for my lowly post. But what the heck, give it CPR and good luck.

I believe it was Willie Sutton who was asked why he robbed banks. He replied, "Because that is where the money is."

So if I were going to look for a vulnerable area to live in, I would pick one with low security and lots of wealthy gringos. ALso one that has easy egress, perhaps more than one. After scoping out the area, I would look for a house without dogs, big dogs, not the ankle biters. If such a house was isolated, so much the better. Then scope out their schedule. For instance, the one that always goes out to eat on Saturday evening. The brand of car and model year would also be a clue.

The above being said, I would check out Brisas, Chapala Haciendas, and both golf club communities.

Certainly do not think life in lakeside is less safe than Mexico City. but we have a fairly small community and a lot of bored retirees, some of whom have nothing better to do than surf webboards and post anything negative. Case in point, a few days ago someone had the spare tire stolen off the back of their SUV and this was deemed webboard worthy. Bet that would not happen in Mexico City. Think it got close to 20 sympathetic responses. I just laughed and shook my head. fug

You and I are in agreement. Those are the vulnerable areas and this is where the action is taking place. You forgot LaFloresta. Unguarded, ungated and some have big bucks. fug

I see. Probably the fact that I live in a nice (thought not elegant) neighborhood with very few non-Mexican neighbors keeps me safe too.

"Case in point, a few days ago someone had the spare tire stolen off the back of their SUV and this was deemed webboard worthy." Or the one that a few sprinkles of rain landed in Ajijic. My favorites are the ones where people take well fed, well groomed dogs off of the street and thence to the pound for possible euthanasia while the owners search for their dog. I wonder if they also takes kids off of the street to orphanages or DIF. But I digress. Yes, I failed to mention La Floresta most likely because they have the appearance of security guards. Wonder how many crooks they have detained.

Having Mexican neighbors in your community that like you and trust you is absolutely the best defense. They know what is going on and will share info if they trust you. The hell with dogs, ADT, electric fencing, broken glass bottles on top of 12 foot walls. Mexican neighbors that you have reached out to and have returned the honor of caring about you are absolutely the best defense for us expats. Good for you in acheiving that trust and respect from them. fug
