Viva Mexico open on Wednesdays again

Can't Post | Private Reply
I just found out that the sign that said "permanently" closed Wed. and Thurs. at Viva Mexico meant only for last week. they had some repairs done and are open again on Wednesdays. Something was lost in the translation of the sign. Thursday is his only day closed.

Did the sign read "permanecemos cerrado el miércoles..." etc? That just means 'we will be closed...'

It said "Closed permanently Wed. and Fri.' and something else. But I asked him last night and he is open on Wed. again - it was just last week but didn't say that. I didn't have time to ask why the sign because I was with a big dinner party.

Sounds to me like an especially egregious case of a bad Spanish to English translation!

That's what I thought, too. I suggested that the Spanish-language sign might have read, "permanecemos cerrado" etc, which doesn't mean permanently--it's one of those Amigos Falsos that can be confusing. I'm still wondering...

I'm sure you are both right - I once saw a similar sign on the door of Bancomer in Ajijic and thought in a panic that they were closing - rushed in to see the manager who chuckled and explained - I might have grasped it at the start had the day they were closing been an usual one but it wasn't.

The incorrect translation makes great sense especially since the owner of the restaurant speaks perfect Spanish and perfect English. It makes even more sense in the context of having repair work done....as in, "We will remain closed....."
