Several friends and I have recently visited some of the sites recommended in John & Susy Pint's book, "Outdoors in Western Mexico." A few updates are: -- You can no longer drive almost to the top of the Tequila volcano. There's a locked gate that blocks cars out. It's about a 1-hour walk from the top from there, which you can do, BUT then there's another locked gate at the very top that makes it pretty near impossible to get to the viewing spot from which you can see the "plug" in the middle of the volcano crater. These locked gates are to protect the dozen or so communications towers at the top of the crater. We were lucky enough to be there on a day when there was some maintenance work being done on the towers, and the drivers were kind enough to unlock the first gate, drive us to the top, and then unlock the second gate. -- The Guava Beach site, at Primavera Forest, is no longer open to the public. We think we found it (by going around a gate that we were not supposed to go around...), and we had just settled in to a wonderful soak in the Rio Caliente when a park ranger truck drove right up to where we were and informed us we had to leave. He gave us a ride back toward the start of the road we'd been walking along and indicated a "better" area where we could soak and enjoy the hot waters. The water was not as deep there, but it was still heavenly. -- As for the "Seven Waterfalls" near Tonala, some friends who tried to find them told me that they were approached by someone along the way who warned them not to proceed. There may have been some gang activity happening near the falls somewhere, so after hearing that from our friends, we decided not to try that trip at all. Instead, we went to San Luis Soyotlan (on the south side of Lake Chapala), drove part way up Mt. Garcia (the "cerro de Garcia"), hiked around there for an hour or so, and then had a wonderful, gourmet lunch at Los Crotos Hotel/Posada in San Luis. So, while the book has some excellent ideas and information, be aware that things may have changed since its publication! Eileen
