The meaning of meanings: "Man up"?

On a closed thread, a poster suggested that the phrase "man up" meant to get ready for a physical confrontation........so I scurried off to the dictionary of slang and learned that this was only one of the meanings.
When I used the phrase, it was the meaning cited as:
"to take care of one's responsibilities."

In my case, being a woman of small size, I would never be foolish enough to suggest the first meaning.

Kumbaya circle?

When I used the phrase, it was the meaning cited as:

That's the way I understood it.

I only knew/know the one meaning, much the same as yours Gringal. Admit that you are responsible and take care of your responsibilities.

As I was recovering from my first of two surgeries to survive a burst appendix, one of my many medicines came in a plastic envelope and was an opaque white gelatinous substance. I asked a friend to translate the spanish instructions for me and he said "Get a spoon and man up, Sunny." This was the first time I had heard the expression, but I had no doubt about the meaning. I'm afraid this woman wasn't man enough and I chose to suffer with the dry heaves.
