The car alarms have begun arriving for "the season"...

To those of you who use winter as a verb and spend "the season" at Lake Chapala, could you please disengage your car alarms while parking in the streets of Ajijic? When the Zeta Gas truck inevitably comes rumbling down the pothole-adorned cobblestones, the alarm will sound.

I have now been listening to a car alarm for 45 minutes, the third in as many days after not having heard one in months.

Your cooperation is appreciated. Enjoy your stay.

Tahby:

We lived on San Francisco´s Russian Hill overlooking that city´s Chianatown for some ten years and I wish to put your mind at ease. Every sumbitch in Chinatown had a car alarm and they were constantly going off at all times of the day and night at all times of the year and, allow me to set your mind at ease. After about three years you do not hear them anymore.

That was a polite request, and timely. Not only do the rumbling busses and gas trucks set them off, but mischievous kids enjoy the sport, too.

No matter how long you live with the noise, it's annoying, especially if you are close to the street.
So please, visitors......douse the alarm while you're here. And welcome.

A well made point, Gringal. Clearly out here in West Ajijic we do not suffer this torment.

As Alex from TJ once wrote, in Mexico "You want to hear the alarm sound every so often to be sure the vehicle is still there".

And FYI new cars turn alarms on when you lock the doors so you can't not set the alarm if you want to lock your
car. Most factory alarms don't go off very easily from moving vehicles or noise. Alarms you purchase and install
yourself can be set to go off when you touch the car and these are the idiots that make most of the noise at least
around here. Even Pedro piped bike won't set off my factory alarm.

I'm glad Zardoz mentioned that about the factory installed alarms.
That has not always been so, as I recall an amusing sight back in San Pedro, CA where a very fancy new Van had a bunch of teenagers surrounding it and enjoying the sport of "touching" the car, at which point a deep automatic voice boomed "Stay away from the car" ; "Do not touch the car". Much giggling.

Talking alarms are aftermarket. Car makers in the US would be sued to death if they sold a car with an obnoxious
aftermarket type alarm system. Also I can't think of a better way to get your paint job ruined than to tell people
not to touch the car as the teenagers demonstrated. If you need an alarm just get a perimeter alarm and add a
glass breakage sensor. Works great and doesn't bother everybody.

Noisy car alarms don't really deter the thieves anyway. I live on a street which has two B&B's with no secure parking, so guests have to park on the street. This is not a "bad" part of town, either. Average for Ajijic.

The thieves are well aware of where the good stuff is likely to be, as in the big new SUV's or newer cars parked there, so what they do, alarm or not, is break the window and take anything of value with lightning speed........and are gone. Your best policy is to take everything up to your room if the hotel doesn't have secure, guarded parking.

How about an alarm that plays the sounds of a woman screaming hysterically for her life? j/k

No one pays attention to car alarms as they go off without the car even being broken into.

I confess that when someone's car alarm goes off, and continues interminably, I end up fervently hoping that the car WILL be stolen so that the noise will go away. If you want to deter thieves, get a device like The Club and put it very visibly on your steering wheel. The thieves will see it and most likely move on to the next car for an easier target. Oh, and also leave nothing else in sight that might entice them to break a window to check it out. Common sense is your best defense, not a noisy, annoying, and ultimately futile alarm.
