There I was, last Friday, stealthy making my way through cyberspace on my daily “Search & Destroy” internet forum mission. My ever-faithful HP Pavilion was walking Point when suddenly the poor devil took one in the heart. No amount of Ctrl/Alt/Del would revive him. Cold boot, hot boot.....Nothing worked. The wounded one eyed bugger just lie there on my desk staring at me unblinkingly. His little cursor frozen in mid-click. I knew what I had to do. It was violent, yet merciful....reformat, install Windows XP and all my documents, settings, favorites, cookies had to be reloaded. My old friend must have been unusually hungry as in the last few nanoseconds of life; he ate my address book. Well, by the time I had done my Dr. Frankenstein routine and breathed live back into that lifeless blob of components, it was after 5:00 PM. Of course, Lagunanet was closed for two days and there is, of course, no 24-hour phone number or emergency number. Unable to reconfigure my Internet settings, I was obviously XXXXed for a couple of days. Two days without e-mail and not being able to take care of other business was going to be a bit of a problem. But...Hey!...I’m made of tougher stuff. I can handle it. Monday morning just before my 10:00 AM call to Lagunanet, my monitor went Tits Up. Now, I gotta tell you the having a fully operational and freshly programmed computer sitting in front of you and not being able to see anything is not the way to start the week. Soooo.......down to see Martin (Mahrteen) in his little shop next to Melanie's. “I can get you a 15-inch for $125 or a 17-inch for $200.” “I’ll take the 17 incher” “It will be here tomorrow.” And, true to his word, tomorrow it be there. Now, it’s Wednesday morning and with everything in working order, I call Lagunanet. No answer....the phones are all busy and remain so for over an hour. The Hell with it.....out the door, into the car and down to Lagunanet. Well, when I got there, Rod didn’t look much happier that I was. He was installing some new software and spam filters and all was not going well. I instantly understood why the phones were busy. Several more phone calls that day and another trip down there and things were still not going well. Long story short.....Thursday the clouds parted, the sun shone and I was back online.........Hallelujah!...Saints be praised! I could read my e-mail from the last six days. I could transfer some money from one account to another. I could finally order some fabric from Hancocks for Patty that she had been ragging me about for the last week. I can read the forums here and at Chapala, and Mazatlan, and Baja. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!......isn’t it frightening how we have come to depend on these damned machines?
