South Shore Weather Station

A weather station has been set up on the south shore so comparisons with Steve's weather station are now possible. I have decided to release a link to the setup and testing data now as my chief website programer is down with a broken femur and just can't do any serious work for a month or so. Who gets the most amount of rain this time of year is just too much fun to pass by.

It's about time. We need to dispel those continuing myths about south shore weather (and other myths too). Am looking forward to having a LOCAL weather station :)

Dispelling myths is always fun. My question to you is which side of the lake gets the most amount of rain, at least your opinion. Looking out over the lake towards the north I can't see Ajijic or Chapala due to a storm, but no rain on the south shore. Going one further I compared the north and south shore July rain totals and found:

July rain total north shore weather: 3.97 in.
July rain total south shore weather: 1.72 in.

One good rain storm of course can completely change the north/south numbers and it is going to take years for the answer.

There is no doubt that the north shore normally receives more precipitation than the south shore. There are weather stations all around the lake, which have records going back between about 40 and 80 years, depending on the location.

I assume you're referring to CEA records, are they available? I'd be very interested as would Dr. Stong.

I'm referring to SMN (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) records.
Some data can be accessed via http://smn.cna.gob.mx/ but I'm not sure if historical data is available online.
About 20 years ago, I collated all the available data for all Chapala area weather stations. (At that time the data were hard copy only and were held in an office in Guadalajara).
The data for these weather stations was the basis for the values I give on Fig 7.1 in Geo-Mexico, the geography and dynamics of modern Mexico (on a graph also showing the level of Lake Chapala, 1920-2008) for the precipitation for different time periods (eg 1935-45, 1946-57, 1957- 1970, etc) showing just how variable precipitation has been in the area over the past 90 years.
I'll see if I can find a copy of a short article I wrote about rainfall variability in the Chapala region ~ if I can find it, I'll post it somewhere and add a link from here later.
