I started a thread that was supposed to get some of our snowbirds who are coming soon to participate. Unfortunately others took it off track.

So snowbirds, or newly permanent newbies...give us your questions. There are a lot of us waiting to answer any small or big questions you have. ... and there are no silly questions. So fire away!!

Maybe there are no snowbirds coming this year?

It is unfair to raise our hopes in this fashion.

Glad to hear you're coming. Have you been here before? Surely you must have questions about the area.

One thing I have noticed this year is rentals are being snapped up quite quickly and the season is only starting. I think there will be a big influx this year.

Rentals going quickly this year? Should I be nervous? We're arriving late November (last week) and will be looking for a place when we get there.

Any chance we might have to turn around and go home? (sure hope not, after driving for a week LOL)

This will be my second visit. I've had many questions however the majority of them have been resolved by studying old posts from months ago and keeping up with current conversations and advise in general. Eventually all questions get answered that way. As a wise man once said "there's nothing new under the sun, no nothing". So I just keep looking for the old stuff repackaged. Thanks to all for lots of good counsel.

I was out for dinner with a group the other night and the lady next to me was looking for a place to rent. Price was not an obsticle. She told me they had been looking for days and had not found anything and although at first there specific area was La Floresta, now they will take anything from Joco to Chapala.

I found it strange that there are so few rentals at this time of the year. It's still early snowbird season.

I honestly don't know if you should be worried or not. It's a strange year here. The market is recovering, the US economy is strengthening, Canada's has been strong, the lake has been accepted by Living Lakes and Ajijic is being promoted up north in a big way. All of these factors may create a huge boom this season.

Far be it from me to second guess a statement like that, but I guess I am (going to second guess it). Although I do not live at Lakeside, I have been there many times since 1998 and always kept up with the number of available rentals. We spent 3 months there this past winter.

If not one Realtor has anything for rent and all the 'posting boards' at the LCS, SuperLake, Post offices, etc. are void of any rentals between Joco and Chapala at any price, then the emaculate recovery has happened! I suspect that the lady was making a broad (no pun intended) statement as folks are sometimes prone to do, and that there are, in fact, still many rentals available. I, as you stated you did, find that a strange statement.

The reason I mention this at all, is that it may (it did) cause some readers to assume that coming down this year, if a rental place was not already secured, was out of the question.

I to found it strange that there were no rental units available at any price. So I just called up my rental agent and checked. He said that he has 50 units available RIGHT NOW at varying prices. If price is no object, around 15 of them are about $1000 and really nice.

As Eastern Airlines used to say "Come on Down" !!!!!

This is good to know. Maybe she is just being too picky about things. I would hate to think of people coming and there being a shortage of rentals. Not to mention what it would do to rental prices.

Thanks for letting us all know that there are tons of rentals out there.

Snowbird Questions - rentals and movies :)

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have two questions.

If I rent from a rental agency in the area, will they accept traveler's checks?

How much is it to go to the movies in the area? Are there many venues? Any? Do you have to go to Guadalajara to see the most recent films?

Thanks :)

And I'm glad about the rental news, Shoe, thanks.

A little over a month ago when I was looking for a place, I certainly didn't have any problems. Every realtor (9, walked to all of them) had a few to show me in my price range ($500 to $700) and with the configuration that I wanted. It took me 3 days to go through enough of them that I didn't want to look any more (they all started to look the same) and decided between a couple of them. I did counter offer what was asked on the place that I got and it was accepted. My offer wasn't a little less either, it was $50 USD less a month and it was accepted. Wonder if I could have gotten it for less? I know I am paying less than the previous tenents did. So it is even a market where you can negotiate a little. Don't just blindly go with what they are asking if you are going to stay here for any length of time.

I do think that Tuatha's friend was a lot picky or really didn't look that hard. That statement she made was a bad representation of the situation here.

Rentals are available folks, and I don't think rental availability should be a reason to stop anyone from coming down to this area. I didn't even look outside of Ajijic and there were plenty for me to look at if I had wanted to.

My rental agent accepts travelers checks, personal checks drawn on my bank in the states, or cash (probably from any country).

To check out the movie schedule here in Ajijic, go to: http://www.cia-ajijic.com/ and click on movie schedule and you will see what is playing now. That will give you an idea of how current the movies are. They really are first run movies. You also get the movies in Guadalajara at the same site.
