Selling contents of home

Can't Post |
Would you please comment on the best way to sell the contents of our home. My mother and I will be moving to Chapala next October and we do not know if we should have an auction or sale the items through the paper. We live in a town of 65,000 in Missouri. Your suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks...Fran and Connie

We are moving to Ajijic this Feb.We have sold most big items in the paper. The rest will be a big yard sale. Then give aways, then trash. An auction would be much faster but you willnot make as much. You have plenty of time to sell your things yourself.See you next year, good luck on your sales.

Auctions are a terrible thing. You lose so much money. You might get 30 cents or less on a dollar. Sell the big items in the paper or on the radio if your area has such a thing like sales on there. Then the big yard sale. Give the rest to charity (get receipt for taxes). Trash what they won't take or give it to anyone that wants it like flea market people.

You have time so take some of it and do it right. I just had a auction and lost a lot of money on personal items.

Nothing is intrinsically good or evil, but its manner of usage may make it so.

Selling by advertizing in the paper may be best. I have also heard of "Whole House Sales" where virtually everything in the house is sold. Kind of like a garage sale but everything remains in its place for the sale. Might draw some attention if advertized as a whole house sale, if it is your intent to sell all, or most, furniture items.

One of the biggest mistakes we made when we moved here some five years ago was selling just about everything rather than bringing it down here. If you have anything of any value, or anything that you would have to replace when you get here (appliances, furniture, etc) you will find it is probably cheaper to go through an expensive move, rather than buying it again here. You also will find that you can get much more here for your old junk than you can get at any up North garage sale.

We brought almost all our belongings when we moved to Mexico. Have never regretted that decision. We could never have replaced the items we brought for the cost we paid to move the items.

I want to thank you so much for the good information that all of you have passed on to us on selling the contents of our home. We are definitely rethinking about how to sell and what to take with us. Fran and Connie
