Route from California to Ajijic

Can't Post |
Hi everybody, yes I know there has been a lot of discussion about what roads to take and border crossings. I'm still a little confused, is Nogales the crossing of choice? Or has Juarez improved their systems to the point where it would be easy and viable. There will be 2 of us (people) in the car along with a cranky old cat (ok call me crazy) and we are not that much in a hurry. However I don't really want to spend a lot of money on toll roads if it isn't necessary. When I have visited in Mexico they didn't always seem like the best choice. OnceI get over the border is there a route that is more easy, fun and not too expensive. Any suggestions are very gratefully received. I am driving down the second week in March. Thanks, Scarlet

On my last trip from Lake Chapala I took the old highway 15 out of Guadalajara until it disappered about 40 miles south of Los Mochis into toll road highway 15. From there it is necessary to use the toll road to Nogales at a cost of about $40. From California you might consider taking Mexican highway 2 at some point to Santa Ana, Mexico where it joins up with toll road highway 15. This should give you a scenic ride and save a bit in toll fees. Going thru El Paso will add about 150 miles to your trip without a significant savings in toll fees.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think it makes a lot of sense for me. I'm travelling down with a friend who will be flying home to Ca. so I thought it would be nice to be able to stop at a few baches on the way down. I have never been to Los Mochis. Would that be a good place to spend the night? Thanks, Scarlet

Santa Ana is a nice clean well located city to spend the evening. A nice place to visit is Guaymas. See link below:
