Ripped off today and it was my fault

  | Private Reply
Hired a taxi driver that I have used several times before to take me to a hospital in GDL today to pick up a friend who just had major surgery and bring him back home to Villa Nova. Total time elapsed four hours. The cost was 900 pesos. When he helped me get up off of the ground from my shock at this price and I asked for an explanation, he said that it is 450 pesos to take folks to GDL and then another 450 to bring them back home. Stupid me, I tried to reason with him by explaining that taking folks to GDL for 450 and returning alone with no income was a loss to him, as he had to go home. Anyway, I offered to split the difference 675 for round trip, as he had to go home anyway. He said 900. When he saw how angry I was, he handed me 50 pesos back, as to only charge me 850. I handed him the 50 pesos back and said I will pay your price, but you will never drive me again. What do you folks think is a fair round trip price from Ajijic to GDL, which took four hours. This guy made 225 pesos per hour. I would love to find a job here that paid half that and so would a lot of folks, especially Mexicans. Should I call him and let him know why he will never be used by me again or just let it go and not call him again? Thanks, fug

PS I DO ABSOLUTELY REALIZE THAT I AM AT FAULT FOR NOT GETTING AN UPFRONT PRICE FROM HIM, BUT HE WAS A TRUSTED PERSON AND DID NOT THINK HE WOULD RIP ME OFF. HOPE NONE OF YOU EVER MAKE THIS MISTAKE.

He took you to Guad = 450 pesos
He returned you to Lakeside = 450

To me that adds up to 900 and I think you got a real deal at 900.

Your logic is unrealistic and in no way were you ripped off.

And people wonder why I point out your inadequacies? If you buy a one way bus ticket or a one way airplane ticket - do they return you home for free. As Bubba Gump stated: "stupid is as stupid does"!

Wow, do you and I disagree. If he had taken us to GDL and returned home alone, he would have made 450, going home with an empty vehicle. I offered to split the difference and offered him 675. 225 more than driving home alone to the same destination as me and my friend. Interesting that you think that 225 pesos an hour is a fair price for a cab driver. Let me send you his contact info. He sounds like the right guy for you. fug

He didn't actually make 900 pesos. You didn't consider his fuel, insurance and maintenance costs. Lets say that added up to 300 pesos so he made 600 pesos.

You are also aware that the going rate for a trip to the airport is 350 pesos each way so considering GDL is quite a bit further, 450 sounds like a good deal. No?

Not sure why I am not able to make myself clear. Cab driver earned 900 pesos for four hours of work, driving his own vehicle. I pay my attorney 500 pesos driving her own vehicle for four hours to renew my IMSS. Cab driver 900, attorney 500? Same round trip service. fug

Don't forget the 30% income tax he will have to pay, being in such a high income bracket.

A cab driver going to the airport makes 350 pesos for 30 minutes work. If he gets a fare back he makes another 350 pesos so that would be 700 pesos for 1 hours work.......you should be glad he didn't charge you 2800 pesos.

Next time hire your attorney to take you......jaja.

Considering the fact that your attorney has to put up with you, the price charged isn't worth it!

Given your track record of whining about the cost of this or that, I have to wonder why you are in Mexico in the first place? In a former life, I was a bartender and had a customer come into the bar. When I approached him, he immediately ordered a top shelf Martini. Shortly thereafter, his wife arrived and started in with: how much is this drink and how much is that drink. Finally she asked me the beer prices, which I rattled off and she chose Brand X because it was one of the least expensive. Before I could leave the table to get her beer, she asked how come her husband could have a Martini? My answer was: "I guess that is between you and your husband"! Point being that one has to pay to play and if you cannot, then don't whine!

The answer numbnuts is in the time, 4 hours. If he hadn't been waiting on you he could have been working for someone else. A GDL or Guad trip is about 1-1.5 hours round trip. OK for 450 Pesos. But 4 HOURS? You have to pay for time as well as mileage. You're not really this naieve are you? You wonder why you catch so much heat here? This is a good example. Stop this "I'm the victim" crap.

You were not ripped off. Time is money. If you have these kind of bizarre business concepts I suggest you negotiate and say to and from
when you get a Taxi the next time. No offense but you need to look at yourself and the concepts you have in your head. People are not
being nice to you because what you are saying makes no sense to us.

fug - DavidH is correct, he waited 4 hours for you. However, he should have charged $ 200 pesos an hour to equal $ 800. pesos. He gave himself a nice $ 100 peso tip. David - His fuel cost less than $ 80 pesos, for a small vehicle, unless he had a gas guzzler.

I know someone who will take you for $ 200 pesos an hour. She's a lawyer too and does Immigration.

There is one and only one way to assess whether you were ripped off. What price would other drivers have charged you? If they can easily beat $900 pesos for that trip then you paid too much. If they all want about the same price then you paid a fair price. If they all want more then you got a great deal. It's about the prevailing market cost not what he allegedly makes.

I know someone who goes to Guadalajara to a glaucoma clinic. The lakeside driver charges 750 pesos and he waits for the exam to be done and then returns the person to lakeside.

I don't have the name of the driver but I can get is. Person went in again today and I'll see if it is the same price.
