Restaurant Review Update?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I was reading the forum under "Normally I'm just smiling and humming" , and especially noticed Uncle Donnie's discussion of a topic near and dear to me.....restaurants. UD mentioned several places that I've never visited. Then I checked Ajijic and saw that the latest Restaurant Review was done in September 2001. Is this right?...doesn't seem like it. At any rate, I'd like to suggest an update if that's OK.

If others would find this of use, please reply to let David Mc know.

Sorry for running at the keyboard so much lately. Just made reservations in Ajijic for late July and can't get the place off my mind. We love it there. Thanks.

You realize don't you that you are now expected to review a restaurant here?

Say, a Zagat-style restaurant review section. That's an idea.

Restaurants....some personal observations

Can't Post | Private Reply
Patty and I just returned from 2 weeks in Ajijic. We ate out once, or twice, a day, everyday. As usual, we found the restaurants in the area to be generally pretty good, none of them really great, and none were really bad. The service in most all places was well above average. If you don’t like the service at Lakeside restaurants, you should try some of the upscale places in Phoenix, or Los Angeles, where they act as if they are doing you a favor by letting you in the front door and allowing your to spend $50.00 or more for lunch. If you are receiving poor service in a restaurant in Mexico, it may be because you didn’t tip the last time you were in.

Here are a few of our observations from three trips in the last year:

BORSALINO’S:
Both Patty and I like the patio and garden setting. I enjoy Jimmy’s NYC style of B.S. and I love to harass him about his neighbor who seems to be raising fighting cocks. We’ve never had a really great meal there, but never had a bad one. The “Saturday Special” of salad, a filet, pasta, and dessert for 60 pesos is probably the best deal it town. Sunday brunch was very good and the place was packed with what seemed to be regulars.

LAS PLAYAS:
The seafood cocktails have always been good and fresh. Neither one of us can finish the large one........try the medium. Two or three of the Enseñada style fish tacos at 10 pesos apiece makes for a pretty cheap lunch. People watching on the plaza is always a plus.

LOS TELARES:
Another very pleasant patio location. Daily specials that include a beer for 90 pesos are pretty good. Service has always been good and I like a place where I can see into the kitchen.

LA NUEVA POSADA:
Probably the nicest location in town and Lorraine runs a good kitchen. If you can sit there on the patio under that giant tree for an hour and not relax, you’re wound up a lot tighter that I am. I like the grilled Arancherra and Patty is addicted to the Thai Peanut Salad.

The last time we were there last week, some people next to us were pointing out to the macaw’s cage and saying “Look at those rats under the cage!” These folks obviously had never seen a ground squirrel before. I ain’t never seen no rat with no fuzzy tail.

?????????:
I don’t know the name of this little place. It’s just across 16th de Septiembre from the side entrance to LCS. It looks like it was converted from a garage. Limited menu and limited prices. On the week-end they have Menudo......not as good as mine, but not bad.

LA BODEGA:
We didn’t eat there this time as we had a late lunch on Sunday, but we did have drinks and enjoyed some good music and good friends on Sunday night. The food I saw served at our table looked very good. The service was a little slow, but the place was packed.

TOM’S IN JOCO:
What can you say about Tom’s. Tom is probably the crankiest old fart gringo in Jalisco........my kinda guy. You can’t call it Tom’s Pizza anymore as he has quit making pizza, but the “Texas Style” barbequed brisket is well worth the drive. The sauce is a little bland for my taste, but he does have to cater to a lot of old folks who can’t tolerate much spice. Next time out, I’ll take my own sauce.

SEAFOOD IN CHAPALA:
This time our driver, Sam, suggested Guicho’s. It was good, but we still prefer Cosumel for fresh seafood. Many folks go there for the endless margaritas, but I like a little tequila in my margaritas. I am convinced that the closest Cosumel’s margaritas ever get to tequila is that the pitcher may have been sitting on the bar next to a bottle of El Jimador for a few minutes.

EL SERAPE:
Ho..Hum! Really bland Tex-Mex food with a diffenate lack of flare. You’d have to really work hard at it to get heartburn.

LAS GAVIOTAS:
One of the lakeside restaurants on the carretera out by San Juan Cosalá. Fresh seafood and good service. The last time we were there mid-week, we were one of only three parties at 1:30 in the afternoon.......gets a lot busier on the week-ends. Nice view of the lake and mountains and the rather wide “beach” leading to the lake.

MANNIX:
Good food and good service. They seem to have a cadre of dedicated regular customers. A little noisy sometimes as the windows open directly onto Ocampo. I like the Osso Bucco, but it is more like a whole beef shank than the little round marrow bones that I’m used to.

That’s enough for today........it’s about time for me to go fix lunch. Today’s menu is bratwurst, saurkraut, hot German potato salad, rye bread and a couple of good German beers.
