RICKI'S JAPANESE and THAI Restaurant Review in Ajijic

  | Private Reply
Last night 6 of us from our Bi Monthly Dinner group ate at Ricki's Japanese and Thai restaurant. We ordered different drinks, some had Thai tea which I'm told is excellent and others had various drinks. We ordered appetizers, soups and salads. One ordered Cucumber sushi rolls and another person ordered the Avocado rolls. Three of us ordered Miso Soup which is always good. Three of us ordered the Green salad, probably one of the largest and best salads in Ajijic. It contains two kinds of lettuce, spinach, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado and red onion. It is served with a bottle of Asian dressing so you can add as much as you like. This salad is large enough for two if both people are ordering entrees.

We ordered our meals. Four of us ordered the Shrimp Tempura appetizer, 6 large very lightly battered, non greasy Shrimp served with a thin soy like sauce. One ordered the Chicken with Udon noodles and veggies. As usual Ricki's food was excellent and very reasonably priced. For two Shrimp appetizers, two Miso soups, one side of rice, one Green Salad and 2 soft drinks, the bill was $ 200. pesos!!!

Food quality and quantity: Excellent
Service: Excellent
Cleanliness: Excellent
Prices: Most reasonable in Ajijic
Ambiance: None

Did you get one order of Shrimp for four people or four orders? Is 200 pesos a very reasonable price for a shrimp, salad, soup and a refresco?

Four different people ordered the Shrimp appetizer that consists of each 6 shrimp on each plate. $ 50. pesos.

Why do you ask about the price? Can you get this elsewhere in Ajijic for $ 200. pesos? NOT. $ 200. pesos was for 2 Shrimp appetizer plates, two miso soups, a rice side order, a green salad and 2 refrescos.

A Shrimp plate in the States is $ 18.00 USD + or -.

I like the review - thanks - but the only price comparison should be with other restaurants in the same area. Prices from NOB have no bearing on what we are paying here.

It's not six shrimp to a plate. It's three good size shrimp cut in half, from tail to head. This leaves 6 pieces of shrimp. Not that there's anything wrong with that - many Japanese restaurants do this so that the shrimp cooks before the batter burns.

Not complaining - just clarifying.

We like ricki's tempura shrimp and the salads, too. Can't say anything else we tried was worth a second visit - but those two items are very good.

Now, this is going to be really picky. I like the food there; some of the best in town......but OMG...if ONLY he'd paint the walls something besides hospital/prison green, it would make my dining experience happier.
But who knows.......maybe it's his favorite color.

Gringal - Yup, picky as usual. I guess you haven't been there in many months. He repainted the walls a dark shade of red many months ago.

According to the above search, this is the 4th time this restaurant has been reviewed with basic regurgitation utilized in each post. I failed to find any new or dynamic information in the follow-up posts that justified a repeat report, so I have to ask just what the point is? This restaurant is also found on each and every one of the "approved listings".

I am in complete and exact agreement.

Johninajijic's $200 MXP dinner also doesn't include an entree. But that's fine. In this hot weather, that shrimp tempura and a salad sounds like a nice light meal. Haven't been to Ricki's in ages.

You're right, John. Haven't been there in awhile. Well, now, I guess I'll have to take my picky self back over there for some of that good shrimp served amidst dark red walls.

Easy explanation for that! John has very limited culinary interests. He eats filet, shrimp and salad. He eschews most of the more creative and original offerings of all the local restaurants. He visits only restaurants that cater to gringo tastes (but let's agree that some of those restaurants have good food). He lives in Mexico and refuses to eat Mexican food.

I notice the bi-monthly dinner club group is dwindling - didn't it used to be 10-12 people? And they all seem to have the same tastes as John, ordering the same filet - which is always the "best" in Ajijic. (Except the person who ordered a hamburger and fries when they went to Hole In One.)

John, take a risk. Live it up a little. Order lamb, or fish, a chile relleno, or God forbid, barbacoa. Visit a taco stand. Maybe a little pasta? Try a torta ahogada. AT LEAST order something other than the same salad, miso soup, tempura shrimp next time you go tp Ricki's.

Pita - I order what I like and know to be excellent in these restaurants as do others in our Dinner group. That way I know I'll get something good every time, like Filet Mignon. I will not or do not order Lamb as I do NOT like it. It's an acquired taste. I don't like fish except for Tilapia which I can make at home. I don't need a restaurant to dry out my fish by overcooking which many do here. And I definitely don't like Mexican food. I'm from the Northeast, Boston area. Don't see Mexican restaurants there.

As far as Italian food, the best Italian restaurant at Lakeside is Angelica's Bistro. Second would be Giovanni's. But why go to an Italian restaurant when neither one can compare to what I make from my fathers old world recipe for slow cooked sauce. I make better Italian at home than the poor excuses for Italian restaurants at Lakeside (La Taverna & Trattoria de Axixic).

The best Italian restaurant is Trattoria di Pomodoro on Ninoes Heroes in GDL.

My Dinner Group has not dwindled to 5 or 6. Many people are away. It is still alive and well and has 11 or 12 that attend.

IMO, that's kind of harsh on John. He likes what he likes and periodically reviews the places that provide it. Maybe those with more varied tastes could take the time to review the places John doesn't like, for the benefit of the general audience here. How about it, Pita? Anyone?
Me? I'm way too lazy. LOL.

So, the gist is that John, every month or so, goes to the same restaurant accompanied by the same people and orders the same food. Then he reviews the restaurant and the food. One wonders if he keeps the same review on his home computer and then pastes the review on this forum after each monthly visit.

Clearly, this is beat up on John time. He seems to defend himself quite ably. I enjpy his reviews. What I do not enjoy is when he goes on the attack after those who have had a different experience than him or have a different opinion. T

John, are you saying that you donīt like Mexican food because you're from Boston, where there were no Mexican restaurants when you were living there? But you're living in Mexico now!

John doesn't like Mexican food, and I have to admit, reluctantly, that the Mexican food served in Lakeside restaurants has so far fallen below the standard of Mexican food served in most cities in California, U.S.A. I wouldn't know about Boston.

So what? John has no moral obligation to like Mexican food just because he lives here. Sister Mary Rulermaster wouldn't have considered that even a venial sin. Whattsa big deal?

Everybody eats, so everybody is a food critic. Our little taste buds are strictly ours. Our opinions are just that: opinions.

I give up. The only thing I got out of this review is that the next time I'm in Ajijic, I won't eat at Ricki's unless they have more than shrimp, miso, and salad.

Since nobody has said the food there isn't good, why don't you just stop by next time you're around and look at their menu?

The first time I lived in Boston in the early 60s there were no Mexican restaurants. The next time fate dragged me back to live there in the mid 70s, I found one not very good one near Harvard Square. I understand there are now several.

I won't review any restuarant that John doesn't like because he persists in replying with how much he hates Mexican food or the food he ate there 7 years ago was so bad, etc., etc.. John's reviews are fine, but his criticques of those who disagree with him are too much to bear. He's not open to civilized dialogue and allows no room for difference of opinion and taste. Eat at John's "reccommended" places and miss a lot of what Lakeside dining has to offer.
