Political Satire

Can't Post | Private Reply
My name is Jonny Kottler, and I'm moving to Ajijic in about a week. Many years ago, I used to occasionally write op-ed articles, (opinion pieces.) Once in a while, newspapers would print them, (L.A. Times, L.A. Herald Examiner, etc.) Yes, I'm that old. My friends told me that my single op-ed piece for the Herald-Examiner closed down the paper.
Looking back, I realize that I never properly trained my talent. Instead of trying to get into big time newpapers, (like the N. Y. Times, which I never got,) I should have written a regular column at the smallest newspaper or magazine I could find. That way, I would have been forced to write every week , and I would have developed into a professional writer. When I move to Ajijic, I will have the time to write. I want to find some sort of blog on the internet which might print a regular political column. My specialty is satire, although I also write "straight" opinion pieces. The problem is -- I don't know the game anymore. I haven't done it in 20 years. In my day, I knew how to apply to the newspapers. Now I don't even know which blogs to try to get into or how to apply to them. Anybody, have any ideas?
By the way, here are the first three sentences of my column, "Radiation Tour of Japan."--

Ann Coulter assures us that radiation is good for your health. She writes, “. . . anyone exposed to excess radiation from the nuclear power plants is now probably much less likely to get cancer.” This gave me a wonderful idea for a business opportunity-- the first “Radiation Tour of Japan."

There is a Writer's Guild that meets on a regular basis at LCS. You read your writings to the group and they then give constructive criticism. There are also two free English language tabloids that come out monthly. "The Lake Chapala Review" and "El Ojo de Lago". You do not get paid for anything you write, but you could be published. Glad you moved out of the " I am horny, 60, straight and single" mode. Bad idea to botch up your image before you even get here. You sound like a good fit, just slow down. Political satire? Join the crowd. Best wishes, T

It is interesting how some people always see the negative side of things. If i ask about the dating scene, I must be horny. I guess if I ask about restaurants, I must be a glutton.

It could also mean that you don't have a TV or a can opener.

I apologize for trying to be helpful to you. It will not happen again. Your first post on this webboard was how you could get sex down here. although, you tried to disguise your needs. Over and out, horn dog. T.

Dear T,
I congratulate you on your ability to read my mind. It must be a comfort to be able to detect dark, secret, and devious intent in the words of a complete stranger. I must learn to do a better job of hiding my dark side.

By the way, T, has anyone ever accused you of being overly negative about people? Have people on this website ever accused you of being over-negative? I wonder if it is just me and the way I express myself which brings this out.
I'm sure you were trying to give me good advice. But I have this habit -- I try to assume the best about people until they prove me wrong. If you always see the dark side in strangers, it can have a corrosive effect on your own soul.
You assumed I was talking about getting sex Lakeside rather than the dating scene.
Did you ever consider that someone who hasn't been on a date in over a quarter of as century might feel uneasy about re-entering the dating scene, particularly in a foreign country? In the nine months since I separated from my wife, I have not gone on a date or had sex. I don't know when I'll be ready to go on a date. It might be next week. It might be another nine months. What I don't like is a complete stranger, who thinks he has magical powers of mind reading, questioning my integrity. I love sex, and some day I will be doing it again. But, believe it or not, some people view the dating scene as a place to find the right woman, not chart up the latest conquest.

Advice: Ignore T and go your way. The reason will eventually be obvious.
