We've only been coming down for 7 years vs. 10, but we do live here full-time and have driven down several times. The major border cities and a couple of hundred miles south are certainly scarier and more dangerous, by far, than they were a few years ago. We finally decided to fly rather than drive, and buy a Mexican-plated car. That said, wouldn't hesitate to drive if we had to, but it's not something we'd do without a really good reason. Lakeside itself feels much safer than any U.S. city we spend time in. Plenty of petty crime and clearly there is drug-related activity here as everywhere in Mexico, but this isn't a major trafficking corridor. At the end of the day, I guess how safe you feel depends on your U.S. frame of reference, but our caution level increases substantially when we return to the U.S. to visit. http://eatinglocalatlakeside.blogspot.com/
