NGOs take Mexican Government to NAFTA tribunal over Lake Chapala

Can't Post | Private Reply
Nine NGOs (non-government organizations) have filed a complaint with the NAFTA Environmental Co-operation Commission (ECC) alleging that the Mexican Government is responsible for endangering the future of Lake Chapala by failing to enforce national environmental laws.

The nine NGOs include the Fundación Lerma-Chapala-Santiago-Pacífico A.C. and the Sociedad Amigos del Lago A.C. ("Friends of the Lake").

The ECC will now analyse the complaint to check its compliance with their regulations prior to any investigation or hearings on the issue. For an article in Spanish about this interesting (and landmark) development, see
