Love in Action Orphonage/Home is in need of help!

Love in Action is located at 76 Pedro Moreno in Chapala. 76A is an empty house - I made a mistake and thought this was the place, but #76 is closer to Gonzales Gallo (the train station street). For those who might not know, 'Love in Action' is a refuge for street kids and unwanted children of Chapala. The youngest child is 3 months and the eldest is 19 years, (but functioning at about an age 9 level) The facility has about 6 buildings and each dormitory has living room, dining room, kitchen & bathrooms and divided into age groups. It is amazingly well organized and people can volunteer in many ways: i.e. provide a lunch once a week, Godparent a child, go there and give the children some cultural encouragement, stock the pantry, etc. etc. The pantry was scary to think there are 60 kids and so little back up of food. There is a paid staff of about 8. The director is totally bilingual and seems extremely competent. The founder Anabel Frutos is still there and is full of love and caring for the children. What started about 8 years ago as a dream for her has become reality. But they need our help. If a group of 3 or 4 or 6 could band together & provide lunch once a week that helps them a lot. Have a child as a Godchild and take them out once in awhile. Or if a committment is not what you want, drop food off to help stock the pantry. The director Dina at 765-7409 - director@loveinactioncenter.org will welcome you and show you around if you are interested.

Is Love in Action associated with a religious group, and if so, which one?

Most of us prefer to donate our time and/or money to an organization whose goals we approve of, and who we would like to see influencing children: i.e. Roman Catholic, Jewish, Mormon, traditional Protestant, Evangelical Christian.......or other.

I found this information on the Love in Action website. They are an AC which means an official charity. That also means there is no religious affiliation:

"Anabel Frutos, the founder of the Love in Action Center, is a native of Mexico, born in Guadalajara under impoverished circumstances. She and her husband, Raul, now live in a poorer district in the town of Chapala. Anabel was aware of the great needs and poverty around her and felt she needed to respond. In 2001, a feeding program was established from her car port for children from the neighborhood. The original group soon began bringing their siblings and friends and then their mothers as well and a parenting class was added to this weekly event.

One day Anabel counted over one hundred people in her house and yard and realized that a more permanent solution must be found. Armed with her determination and faith in God, she found an old pottery manufacturing shop that consisted of a number of small buildings. A step of faith was taken to secure a piece of property where people from the area could come to be fed and encouraged.

Eventually classes were implemented to teach a skill that could help those with a limited income to generate finances.
Some of the courses offered were:
English, guitar, tin sculpting, crafts, sewing and salon training.

We saw a need to establish a day care for the neighborhood and when we went to get certified as an A.C., (civil association or nonprofit) the government asked if we would consider being a shelter for children. So now we are helping children that are sent to us from throughout the state of Jalisco in Mexico."

I've just heard that it's under the auspices of an evangelical church of which Annabel's husband is the minister. If this is the case........why not say so out front? It wouldn't be the first time that charitable work was done in the hope of harvesting souls. In this case, I'd want to know what the agenda of said church was with regard to some issues that are real hot buttons for many folks.

I don't say if the home is affiliated with a religion or not because I don't know.

Okay.........you don't know. I believe you. I also suspect that a lot of people who have become involved don't know, either. I feel much better, personally, about knowing what the agenda is of any organization I support, but that's just my opinion. That's why I felt really good about supporting the international organization, "Feed the Hungry", which wasn't connected with any religious or political group. I wish they were operating in the lakeside area.

At the same time, if Love in Action can help feed hungry kids, that's a good thing.

Ok I don't have a problem with the religion connection. I would if they wouldn't feed a pagan kid or whatever and I doubt
if anybody who has done this thing would, so moving on from that issue. I am not willing to make the commitment for a
lunch but what else can a person do? Give cash? Buy a big bag of rice? Or something? Money you always wonder. A
big bag of rice is food everyday is my thinking but I also know they probably need cash. Heck they probably need everything. Comments???

I understand they need food staples. A big bag of rice would be wonderful, beans, tomato sauce, bags of pasta for pasta and soups - any dry or canned foods that help when feeding 40 + children.

They also need seeds for the garden they maintain, especially peas. I know you can get seeds in the hardware stores here.

Here are the directions to the "Love in Action" home in Chapala:

If you are driving away from the main center of Chapala you pass the bus station on the right. The second street past the bus station is Pedro Moreno where the home is located. There is a small black sign for Pedro Moreno on the chain link fence at the corner. Turn right here and go about 4 blocks. Go past 76A on the right and you will see the house numbers go up and down in no special order. At the corner of the last street before you get to the old train station road on the right there is painted a big red heart and above it it says "Love in Action" and #76. I also forgot to mention they have a thrift shop there where you can buy a warm sweater at a reasonable price, or donate your old clothing and household goods.
