Lost Passport

If you are a US citizen with a flight booked for Wednesday back to the US and find you have lost your passport what can you do?

We had a similar experience recently. We showed up at the airport for a family trip NOB, and discovered upon checking in that our 5 year old's passport expired 2 weeks prior. Our bags were returned to us and we were sent home. :(

We immediately went to the US consulate in Guad (fortunately only several blocks from our house) and tried to get an expedited passport- no luck. It took 2 weeks for the new passport to show up at our doorstep- we were told it could take 3-4 weeks, so we were pleasantly surprised.

The consulate employee said they only do expedited passports in emergency situations. Our trip to Disneyland didn't qualify. Not sure what your situation is, but you might have to delay your plans by a couple of weeks.

Stina, they may not have to delay their plans.

Jerry - If you are pressed for time, and you need to return sooner, you can travel to Laredo or El Paso by bus. At the border, you are not required to have your passport, yet. You simply need a US driver's license. A birth certificate would expedite your entry, but it is not required. From the US side, you can catch a flight to your final destination. I do this quite often, whenever I deliver vehicles to Nuevo Laredo or Monterrey. A taxi will take you from the Nuevo Laredo central, across the border, and to the Laredo airport for about $40 USD. There are three or four flights daily to Dallas and Houston. Good luck, and I hope this helps.

FYI we called the US Embassy in MC and were told that since we had a real medical emergency they would issue a passport Tuesday to replace the lost one.

I'm glad you will be able to get the passport so fast Jerry. I hope everything goes well for you two and that both of you are able to return home (Lakeside) soon.

Isn't that odd? Just because your passport expires doesn't mean that citizenship/country of origin expires.
