Good News: Lake Chapala was accepted as full member of Living Lakes!
More information at the presentation on September 19th!

I hope Justus Hauser won't mind that I copied his message and reposted it here. Here is what he wrote

The decision about the full membership of Lake Chapala and with it Sociedad Amigos del Lago de Chapala A.C. and Fundacion de la Cuenca Lerma - Lago Chapala - Santiago A.C. came this afternoon (and reached me finally in the evening - sorry about the delay):
The Living Lakes Conference decided to accept us as new permanent members!
On Friday, September 19th at 7:00 p.m. Amigos del Lago will give the England presentation and more information at the Palacio Municipal. Please join us!

Thanks Pete and Justus for the good news. I would like to point out that means that Amigos del Lago de Chapala A.C. and Fundacion de la Cuenca Lerma - Lago Chapala - Santiago A.C. both need more support than ever. With this international recognition of Lake Chapala's problems and WITH continued local support the two organizations can really do much more than ever before.

Is there going to be a Celebrate the Lake party? Everybody have a good time and raise a little money at the same time? And,.. if this does come to pass, would hopefully be in early November?

This is, to be sure, wonderful news. But the question that comes to my mind is, "Now what?" Or more precisely, now that the local organizations and the lake have been accepted as part of the Living Lakes coalition, what exactly will that do for the Lake, and who will be doing it?

Should residents of the Lake Chapala area expect a massive influx of wizened scientists from Switzerland or somewhere, armed with truckloads of testing equipment?

Will armies of agricultural experts show up with all the latest irrigation technologies for the upstream farmers?

Will water and sewage treatment facilities spring up around the upstream industries and villages?

Will the World Bank and the IMF start throwing money around to help make all this possible?

I'm probably as excited about this as the rest of you, but I'd like to know a little more about the nuts and bolts of it all. In other words, how is all this supposed to work, in a practical sense?

Gary, Gary, Gary:

What is wrong with you, boy? What are you seeking; reality or a circle jerk? I think I know the answer. In your case you seek the truth but many here do not. I shan't posit the presumed answers here as yet but wonder out loud why Sr. Villagomez announced this event on Tuesday and was villified by his associates who denied his prescience but glory in his correctnesss.

Praise be unto the Lord.

Bubba, if Sr. Villagomez was the turkey that announced Tuesday the results of a vote that was not taken until Friday then he deserved what he got.

As far as Gary's question, the main thing is now that the plight of Lake Chapala has now officially (at least internationally) gone from what some thought of as just fussing from lakeside people (mostly gringos) to a serious problem. Now that everybody can see that there really is a problem, things will get more attention.

This is very encouraging as Lake Chapala is just too worthwhile to not be preserved.

Jerry:

I hear you and am pleased as to the outcome. I was just wondering what was going on out of sight. It seems a bit complex to me.

Bubba, The lake is in trouble. Everybody has known that for some time. By building dams and having farmers using "flood" type farming the water flow into LC had to be less. Unfortunatly here as in every other place the governments seem to work on a "sqeeky door" principal. Now it looks like the sqeek may get louder and they might hear it. What exactly needs to be done I do not claim to know. I do know that a reasonable way of regulating the flow in the river is possible if the pols just really look for it.

OK, we have had our fun now here is what I surmise:

Sr. Villagomez received word that Lake Chapala had been accepted as a full member in Living Lakes as of no later than Tuesday of last week through a cohort somewhere in the organization. Certification was to come through formalities to take place on the 13th. These formalities were to be respected. This is similar to the Oscars where everybody knows who will win within the organization but no no one is to publicize such information.

There is meanness within these competing groups who are forced to work together in order to achieve a common goal. That is, inclusion in the Living Lakes brotherhood for whatever reason. But, they detest each other intensly.

Sr. Villagomez broke the code of silence for whatever reason and, therefore, upstaged his compatriots much to their annoyance.

The Lake Chapala support groups are now full fledged members of this Living Lakes thing.

Some questions based on postings here:

What does "international recognition" bring us? Mexicans do not cherish outsiders butting into their problems in my experience.

What is wrong with "flood" type irrigation? What do readers propose in its stead? What is the cost of redesign and reconstruction of the agricultural infrastrucure of Guanajato and Jalisco states so that Lake Chapala can be reconstituted for the sake of a few Gringos and marginal fishermen?

Why would Mexicans respect European Gringo interference over that of local expats who have demonstrated an appalling ignorance of their country?

I look forward to lively discourse on this matter.
