LUCKY AND UNLUCKY

We were walking the plaza in Guadalajara yesterday when Christa felt a hand on her neck. She yelled out "HEY" just as a guy grabbed her gold-rope necklace and took off. Her shout alerted 4 men near us who looked up and, seeing the thief in the act, took off after him. Within a few minutes they were dragging him back, and had recovered the necklace. One man was on his cell phone and within a minute, uniformed police showed up. That's when one of the 4 men informed us they were all off-duty policemen! They just happened to be hanging out at that place at that moment in time. By now they had their badges out hanging around their necks. That makes us the luckiest people in the world and the bandito the unluckiest.

We were escorted to the metropolitan police headquarters for the formalities and were treated to the greatest courtesy and respect possible. Several officers apologized for the incident. It seemed they were embarrassed that this had happened to foreigners. We assured them that that this was certainly not Mexico's fault, that this happens everywhere in the world, and if anybody was at fault it was us for making ourselves easy marks. We can't say enough about the professionalism of the Guadalajara Police! Thank you all.

We've all heard it before and knew better, but just didn't think! So the message to all is, leave the jewelry at home!
"The trouble with life is there's no background music."
