Zorro - for insurance for the trip down, we have always been happy with Bob Acosta, San Xavier Insurance: mexicobob@aol.com or http://www.mexican-autoinsurance.com/. Once established here I would recommend switching to a local agent - it's nice to have someone in the same location to go to bat for you should anything go wrong. Health insurance - this is a large subject in itself. There is IMSS, the government health scheme. Costs a nominal amount per year (something in the region of $300 US I think) but it takes up to 3 years to be completely covered and pre-existing conditions may keep you out, or at least out of coverage for those conditions. Some people keep it as a backup - it's a personal decision - the system is not in good financial health and I wonder for how many more years the Mexican Government will be kind enough to let expats participate. Private insurance - no where near as expensive as the US. We carry catastrophe insurance with ING and it costs us around $3800US for the year for both of us, with a 30,000 peso deductible per occurrence (not per year). We had to be under 65 when we first signed up - over 65 you are out of luck with this particular company. I think there is one company, Seguros Monterrey sticks in my mind, who will accept you up to 70. Day to day medical costs are reasonable here - 150 pesos or thereabouts for a doctor's office visit. $20US for a chest x-ray so basic costs can be met by most people easily. It's when and if things go wrong, that it can get expensive. Private hospitals are not going to admit you without some arrangements being made to meet the bill. Once in, they may refuse to let you out until a satisfactory payment plan has been agreed to. I'll be happy to send you contact information for our ING agent, who provides our health insurance, home owners and auto insurance, should you want it.
